Hi, I'm thinking of buying more RAM for my computer (I have 512mb) and was wondering (probably a dumb question) how you tell what type/speed it is without taking the computer apart. Yes I am that lazy!

Run a copy of Sisoft Sandra or download this really great freeware application and it will give you that info too.

Note that matching memory is more than just comparing rated speeds.

nice little program. Ths is what it said:

Physical Memory : 512 MB (1 x 512 DDR-SDRAM PC2700 @ 166 MHz)

I did a quick check on tigerdirect and it seems they don't sell 166 MHz anymore. Is it possible to replace my 512 with something like this which I assume is a little faster?

As long as the PC#### is compatible it should work. The new stick of ram will work as fast as the lowest components speed(Your original ram at 166mhz)
As long as you get PC2700 you should be fine.

This is a good set of 2x512mb for cheaper and its corsair which is a VERY good brand.

Single sticks will usually set you back more...
But if you don't care for brands then you might even like this 2GB set for a tiny bit more than the 1GB you picked out.

You can use PC3200 instead because it's back compatible and it will even give you head room for tighter timings. It usually not a good idea to mix match memory because the chips might be made by different manufacturers, vary in size, and latency. Your best bet is to retire the old stick and purchase two of the same brand and speed.

Thanks guys. Fuel, I have never really checked out newegg as I'm in Canada but it's an interesting site. I only showed that one RAM link to see if the 333MHz were ok. I think I'll try to replace my original RAM with a faster breed and get at least 1GB so again thanks for the help.

Canada like me... newegg won't be of any use to you. They won't ship to Canada.
Sophocles is very right... I don't know why I wastrying to find compatible stuff... its obvious that you should start anew and retire the old.
