I got a really nice new pc and I think I got a good deal but it's been nothing but a headache since I got it home. since I don't know to much about computers I went with what the pc store suggested I would need. I have a sempron +2800 1.60GHZ 192MB RAM and for some reason when I check my system properties it says "physical address extention", I was told my pc would have 256MB RAM when I questioned why it says it only has 192MB RAM I was told by the pc store that it's because I have a 64 bit sound card. I just want to get a second opinion just to insure they are not giving me a line. This is not why my pc is giving me a headache however, my main problem is that since I got my pc home it's lagged and when I go to open programs my pc freezes for a few minutes and at times will unfreeze and open programs I didn't tell it to open or it will not open programs I have told it to open unless I open them several times and even still only one of the program will open. Also when I try to check my msn email I click once and two boxes pop-up one is empty and does not load the other loads. I am get really feed up with my computer and don't know what to do with it. Can some one please give me some advice on what I can do to get it working right please and thank you with a cherry on top. (in praying position begging please pretty please) thanks for your help I love this site I come here for all the help I need.

I Read what you wrote and I myself once had a Computer that Gave me very much those same problems what I did was eventually wreck it and buy a new one after I learned more about Computers. My advise would be to bring this Computer back to the store and see what else they have and get one with an Intel P4 Processor with no less than 2.8GHZ and a Hard Drive with no less than 80GB of size and memory no less than 512MB. If you are unable to return or exchange your Computer I would try adding more Memory so that the system has a minimum of 512MB aswell as getting a Sapphire Radeon or ATI Radeon Video Card with no less that 128MB of Memory The Sapphire is ATI but are just a little less expensive and built all the same. Hope this will help you please let me know how things work out by for now.

I Was just reading your message again and it says that the PC store sales Person told you your Computer shows that you have 192MB of Memory because of the 64 bit Sound Card I think the Sales Person needs a new Job because it sounds like he has no idea about Computers himself. I have never heard of a sound card effecting Memory Size before but I do not think that it would anyway because the Sound is a differant Component all together. Well you got ripped off I think dont feel to bad about it though because I did once too when I bought My first PC.

unfortunatly returning it is not an option and I was told that if anyone opens the case up my warranty will be voided, but I don't think I want a warranty through that computer store they seem like really wins. (that was sacrastic just so everyone knows). I know how to change the hard drive but I don't have a clue about the rest of it would it be hard for me to do myself? Where I live there is a pc repair place that has a flat rate of $30 for labour and then the parts on top of it. which would be a better choice?

is your videocard built into the motherboard or in a slot because if built in than 64meg out of 256meg is assigned to the videocard leaving you with 192meg. get another stick of ram.

I don't know if it is are not how would I be able to tell. I can't open the case but the side is clear so I can look in. I don't know if this will help but I have a As rock K8 upgrade series mb + 939cpu board. At least that's what the box says they gave me with all the stuff from my pc suck as the drivers and so on. like I said I don't know much about computers.

Hi lestomboy,
Your on-board video seems to be claiming 64MB of your RAM (not your soundcard :^)
I agree with Sentagram - except for the part about Intel P4 processor.
It would seem that you have an inexpensive PC built around a Sempron processor. The good new is, these run very cool and hardly use any electricity, requiring only a modest power supply (which is probably what you got).
However, this rig should have come with 512MB!
256MB is really basic, and completely useless when video is leaching 64MB away...
I recommend buying 1 x 1GB PC3200 (and throwing the 256MB stick away).
If you are on a VERY tight budget, you could keep the 256MB and add a second 256MB for about $20 bucks.
Anyway, memory is your single biggest upgrade ;^)
Hopefully you have an empty video slot (even if only AGP 8x) and can upgrade from the on-board video if you should wish.
With lots of memory, reasonable AGP video (GeForce 6800 or Radeon X1600) and a good tight WinXP installation, your PC will be just fine, and enjoyable.
You got a WinXP CD with the PC, right?
1GB sticks of generic PC3200 are only $89 bucks (Canadian) these days - how bloody cheap were those guys to send you home with only 256MB!? And knowing the video claims 64MB! LoL...
Hopefully you were counseled to spend a bit more but chose not to - otherwise, that's a loser PC shop :^(

looking at the back of the case, is the video cable connector horizontal or vertical. if vertical than is built in videocard. if horizontal than is a slot videocard. check your motherboard manual which will show what connectors on the back of case. also can check in bios but is not 64meg or 128meg apature.

LoL - yes!
What if they set his AGP aperture to 128MB, and he has only 192MB to work with?
Aaarrrgh...
@ddp, surely he has on-board video (or where is the 64MB going?)
I did not check the mobo - could it have PCI-E?
Or maybe no graphics slot at all...

okay I am looking in the manual and it says something about AGP slot 1.5v_AGP1 is this what I am looking for? As for my cards they seem to be attached to the motherboard. As for the computer store when we walked in we told them we did alot of downloading and our pc is always on and we didn't really have a ton of cash to spend. They showed us some cheap models one being a low grade compaq, I have issues with compaq their pc seem to hate me and the tower laid flat on the two models and we wanted one to stand up they suggested we could put them on their side but have so many animals we knew it would get a beating so we wanted a wider tower. They told us we could pick any of the cases they had and have one built at the same price as the compaq with basically the same components just from another company. Not know much about computers we thought it was a good idea, however the tower we chose has lights on the fan and small ones on the front, they also added a large fan with a light so now I have three fans one located close to the mother board one across and one in the back. They did give me a copy of windows home edition although it is a burnt copy. they did not suggest we should have extra memory put in and didn't not explain that we would lose 64 mb. My girlfried would like to have it upgraded and I really appreciate all the help and thanks sooo much for the canadian pricing due to I am in canada thank you all you have been very helpful. since she wants to upgrade slowly could some one suggest what we should upgrade to and what we should upgrade in order?

I (and ddp) just did!
You need 512MB but it is so inexpensive you should get 1GB.
If you are really broke, at least get another 256MB.
You have an empty AGP slot. Radeon X1600 (512MB) are $169 bucks in Toronto.
But get the memory, first thing!
Here is a Toronto memory link for you:

I do have the the sticker on my pc saying it is authentic but they activated the windows before they gave it to me. I don't know exactly what my gf is willing to pay to have it upgraded at this time but I know she wants to do it slowly.

One word RAM (Random Access Memory)
My computer was just like that, I have a good processor and a new nVidia Graphics card, it was crap, I had 256 megs of ram, I got a second RAM chip (512 MB) and then everything ran faster and games loaded faster,
NFS:MW took about 1 min to load and now it takes no longer than 15 seconds
