DVDFAB was put to work on a Band of Brothers disk and it started off at great speed but soon slowed down to a crawl.

Now it has been at it for 24hours and still going.

Now the thing is that Task Manager shows the process as consuming NO cpu cycles at all! It is not doing anything! It is not furiously number crunching, it is not madly searching the disk for some place to continue, it is not doing anything.

Is it dead? Hung up? No. Because left alone for long enough the blue line showing progress will lengthen and the number of bytes in the file it is currently working on as written to the hard drive will increase. Like right now it has been working on vts_57_3.VOB since 11p.m. last night and it is now 10.24am the next morning. The file is now at 653,824bytes. I refresh the screen and the file is at 655,616

If I stare at the task manager long enough I occasionally may see it flash up 2% usage for the dvdfab process.

So the question is why is it so slow? It is not accessing the disk. It is not computing in mem, it is doing nothing.

How can a prog do nothing? There's something basically, seriously wrong here.

Even if the disk is full of scratches (it is pretty worn) the prog is not going through its error handling proc and getting on with the job. It is doing nothing.

How can it do nothing and then come back and do something?

It sounds like XP has made a lowest priority background process out of it. I'll try and research that aspect a bit.

Meantime if anyone has any clues or mere observations I'd behappy to see them.

regards,

ab :)
