Hi,
I need some help on what the issue is with my techniques. I am using Memorex, DVD-R which is supported by all 3 of my DVD players at home. Some media has burned successfully to my disc, others won't play in my DVD player but will play on my computer. My final attempt to make this last media file transfer to DVD format was with Nero. However I have used about three other software programs in the atempts to make this work. I have converted the files from dvix to video-ts/audio-ts and then attempt to burn. I have one film that works every time with every software program I have tried, and another which won't play in my dvd player but plays on the computer. I did find one program that worked, Cucusoft, but I don't like this software like I like Nero. Am I doing something wrong? What aspect ratio is the best to record at? Does the encoding mode need to be set at anything special? And how much does it matter whether or not it is NTSC or PAL? I'd appreciate any help I can get, thank you.

Memorex uses a hodge podge of manufacturers for their media, including some sub-standard media. That's why so many frown upon using Memorex. Use Nero CD/DVD Speed or Info Tool to check the manufacturer of the problem discs and see if it is different then the good one.

I've used DivxToDVD and ConvertXToDVD without problems.

Also booktype to DVD-ROM if your burner supports it. That will help with unsupported media types.

Thank you for your reply. My DVD player won't support DVD-Rom, only DVD-R so bummer in that instance. Also I am not too sure it is the quality of disk that is causing the problem, although it may be. Reason I say such is that it is the same media files giving me trouble each time, and the same movies that work everytime. I have downloaded the files off of the internet, would this cause the problems, and if so why does one software program work while all the others do not? I have struggled with this for hours now, so I appreciate your response. Thanks

Hi aoclymor. Were all your burns successful or did you have burns fail? I just want to make sure this is a playback issue and not a burn issue.

DVD players sometimes are real picky with the media they will play. For example, Memorex media may actually be manufactured by CMC MAG, RichoJPN, etc. Just because DVD- is supported, does not mean it will play DVD- media manufactured from every company.

You can use programs like Nero CD/DVD Speed, Nero Info Tool, and DVDInfoPro to find out who actually manufactured the DVD discs you have. Take a look at the disc that plays well and see if the other discs match. Even in the same spindle of discs, media may be made by different manufacturers!

If your DVD players (you noted you have three) support DVD-, then they support DVD-ROM. Original manufactured movie discs you purchase, rent, etc. are all DVD-ROM's. By booktyping DVD+ media to DVD-ROM, one is actually making their discs more compatible for the many standalone DVD players on the market.

I'm not saying the info above is your problem. It could be software related too. Have you taken a look at Alkohol's guide to burning AVI to DVD?

Well I finally got it to work with one of the films I have been fussing with all day. Therefore it must be something to do with the disc manufacturer like you said or the fact I chose NTSC verses PAL and slowed down the speed of the burn. All my attempts prior did burn successfully, and will play on the computer. It is interesting what you say about DVD-ROM, only because in the manual for my DVD player it says "Discs which can not be played with this player:DVD-ROM/DVD-RAM/VCD" I am only learning about these things, so is there one disc which is good for all three of the above (DVD-ROM/DVD-RAM/VCD)and I just misinterperted the statement? What is the best quality of disc to use? Sony? Just for knowledge's sake is there a reason one media file would be successful everytime using the same disc manufacturer and another file would be consistently more disfuntional? I have learned a lot, and thank you for all your time and help answering my questions. After all day of fussing I finaly got results.
