Your players like the -R format because those are more compatible with most of the standalone players out there. With these BenQ drives, you can Booktype the +R format to DVD-ROM and be pretty much compatible will all the players out there.

XPS Gen.4 3.6GHz, 4GB RAM, 250GB+750GB Seagate HD, BenQ DW1650, BenQ DW1655, Samsung SE-S184M (External) Dimension E520 3.0GHz 3.5GB RAM, 74GB+500GB Seagate HD, Samsung SH-S183, Samsung SE-S184M (External)

Only if you are bitsetting to booktype DVD-ROM (which only DVD+Rs can do using the Benq 1650 we're recommending) are DVD+R better than -R in standalone players. When you booktype DVD-ROM, you're going to get slightly better compatibility than -R in standalone players. So, if you don't lightscribe, then yes, the 1650 will be perfect, only $41 at Newegg.com the last time I checked.

Lightscribe media runs about a buck apiece when on sale. I don't believe they make Dl lightscribe discs yet?

These benqs highly favor the dash. I ditched that format a long time ago. Now I use the dash Ty-g02 shiny inkjet printables only because of the lower price than those same discs in the plus format.

Stand alone players do have more trouble recognizing my dash backups off of my 4 benqs. Those plus format backups booktyped to dvd-rom have very few issues on stand alone players.

Only the plus format can be booktyped using capable writers. Plextor/Liteon/LG/Some sony/Ricoh are just a few.

I've got 3 other burners that don't booktype, but stand alones prefer their dash backup.

Players can do some weird stuff. They can even pick out issues with different burners. They may like the dash backups off your memorex burner, but slap in a Benq dash backup and they may not.
New burner, then you'll have to find the correct format that suits it. Players will have more trouble playing benq dash backups than they will the booktyped backups.
