Hello All, I've been getting the same issue since I started this fun but lately seems mre prevelant. I rip a DVD to my hard drive w/ either Decrypter or DVDFab no problem. I burn it to a DVD-R using Nero Recode or DVDShrink no problem. However, when I watch the movie on my Sony DVD player it freezes usually about 3/4 of the way through the movie....normally right around the best part.

I've been through these forums to no avail - I'm burning at 4x with Verbatim and still get the same issue. Any help/advice is certainly appreciated - I'm pulling my hair out over all these coasters

MrCre8tiv,
You're already burning at 4x and using good media, so:
Quote:
Sony DVD player it freezes usually about 3/4 of the way through the movie
This sounds like it's happening twards the end of the movie and is usually caused by burning too close to the disk's outer edge, where some players have a tough time reading a disk correctly. Have shrink produce a smaller file size of 4300MB, to do this run shrink and goto:edit-->preferences, in the preferences tab choose custom from the dropdown menu and enter a value of 4300.

I agree with John try to custom set the output file to 4300. I use TY's and have to do this as well due to freezing towords the end of the video.

I was getting the same issue. If you stop the movie try skipping the chapter that is freezing on, does it play as normal starting on the next chapter? Mine did. I did some research and found basically that Nero can't handle the layer break properly. At least thats all I could find. I Use DVDFab to rip to my hard drive then use DVD Shrink to convert it to an ISO and then DVD Decrypter to burn it. (DVD Shrink has an option to make the ISO and burn directly with DVD Decrypter) Since I have been doing it this way I have not ran into this issue. If you try this let me know how it turns out for you. Good Luck!

Thanks Guys, I will try the "4300 fix" tonight and let you know the outcome. Regarding Lothar74's note - I follow all the way through the buring w/ decrypter part - I was unaware decrypter could be used to burn??

Sorry, one more thing to add... Lothar, I can skip the freeze sometimes by skipping that chapter - but usually it will freeze again shortly thereafter. Sometimes, if left frozen for a few moments it will begin playing ....sometimes at another spot - even another chaper or at the beginning of the movie - but it always will keep freezing after that spot. The only trouble w/ the Layer theory is that sometimes it happens earlier in the movie (before I would expect the layer break) - anyway, I will try your suggestion and get back to you all. Thanks for the suggestions and thanks for taking the time to respond - this is a great forum...

You're correct, Nero can't handle the layer break properly when burning to dual layer media, so therefore when the break is reached you'll experience a skip or a freezing of the movie for a moment. MrCre8tiv states that

I burn it to a DVD-R using Nero Recode
, dual layer media isn't being used here.

@MrCre8tiv
DVD decrypter can be used to burn ISO images to disk, here's a guide;

johnl123, love the avatar! Wow, I have never heard of anyone using a single layer disc run into this issue. I missed that originally. I have backed up 90% of my movies on plain DVD-R's and not had a problem. I wasted about $40 in dual layer discs with this issue before I realized what was going on. Still re-burning all the ones that were crap! I have tested almost of of the newly burned discs and not one Coaster yet. Just curious MrCre8tiv, what burner are you using? Hope all turns out for you!

What is the speed rate and format of your verbs?
Do you backup entire disc or re-author main movie only?
Are you slapping any sticker labels on them?
What is the brand name, model# of your DVD-RW drive, and the current firmware version?

This is a normal issue. Stand alone players do have a harder time with backups. Verbatim is excellent quality media. You should only have to reduce it to 4360 mbs at the minimum, unless you got into a bad batch which can happen on any brand name media.

Verify one of those problematic backups using your DVD-RW drive in your pc to play it. Look at that general area where they freeze up. That burner should play its own backups and look near original in quality.Verify them in other drives like: Game consoles/pc drives/friends or family member players. The more drives, the better understanding you can get from watching how those drives react to that area of the backups.

Some of these burners perform better at a faster burn speed. My benqs show fewer errors with Verbatim +16x on the 8x and 12x speed. The slower burning gives me the most issues. Verbatim were designed to be burned faster, not slower.

Your media quality should be ok,just need to know about your burner quality.Your backups should play without flaws on your pc. If that pans out ok,majority of the time it is the stand alone player/s fault. A lens cleaning may be in order, but that is a last resort in my book.Last resort before stand alone player replacement.

The Verbs are 16x -R's - although I have had this issue w/ Sony & Verb 8x. I am starting to think the issue became more prevelant since I've been burning w/ lower speeds (and these 16x discs).

The Brand of my burner is an I/O Magic external USB 2.0 16x d/l drive. The model is IDVD16DDME. I don't know how to check the current firmware but I just updated it this week w/ dvrupdate.com

I do not put labels on the burned DVD's (atleast not until I verify them) and I always back-up only the main movie.

I did followed Lothar's suggestion on burning w/ Decrypter (or more importantly not Nero) and that disc is perfect.

I'm thinking there's something to this theory of burning at the speed the disc was designed to burn at...

I like to burn half the rated speed. Burning those 16x verbs at 8x seems ok. Errors are lower and playback is ok.

Sony +1x-8x I burn at 8x. Both my benq 1620s will burn these at 16x if I slack off and not watch my burn setting if it is on max.

Did you try playing those backups on your pc using your I/O magic external drive and a playing program like windvd, powerdvd, etc?

Externals aren't my specialty.

The Nero backups gave you these issues and dvd decrypter's is ok?

It's the opposite for me. Nero can be flaky at times. It also has a packet called INCD which can screw us up. Some stand alone players can also tell a difference between burn engines.

Some of these players may need a special recipe like: Burn engine/MID coded media/and burn speed. These players are called picky players. They seem to pick out those differences after they get a lot of wear and tear on them. That's why you need to verify them using the DVD-RW drive that produced them,to play them.

I know this answer's going to be dificult but I've had it go both ways w/ playing the coasters on the I/O Magic - Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Some discs seem to be less screwed up than others - the really bad ones will freeze on the I/O Magic.

So yesterday I ripped "The Fog" w/ Decrypter, ran it through VOBBlanker, Then DVD Shrink (Standard size cause the orig file didn't need compressing) then used Decrypter again to burn it. Then watched it on my Sony stand alone DVD player.

About 90% through it froze just for about 2-3 seconds then resumed play and had no more problems through to the end.

I did the same thing w/ King Kong a week ago, except I burned that w/ Nero Recode after Shrink, and it froze repeatedly at around 80% through the movie - it froze for like a minute, then resumed for like a minute and froze again, it did this twice before I finally got off my backside and chucked it.

OK So I just put Kong in the I/O magig and it does freeze as well (using Power DVD). Same as the Stand Alone - freezes for a minute or so, then recovers only to freeze again a minute or so down the line.

I'm surprised I'm the only one running into this.

It sounds like that I/O drive doesn't like those dash verbs since the player and the I/O has problems with them. It also had trouble with the 8x speed of your sony and verbatim. I like all those brands, but in the plus format.

Maybe you got a bad usb cable?

I've seen that posted here a few times.
