Sorry to ask this very first question, but I was not able to find a direct answer for such question.

My point is: My DVD Recorder generates the VOB & cia files from unencryped sources (TV for example). I want use those files on Nero to burn, on DVD Shrink to edit, this sort of things.
To feed those applications, can I use simple Windows drag&drop operation or do I need first to pass those unencrypted VOB files to DVD Decrypter ?

Thank you to share.

No. DVD Decrypter is only needed for encrypted DVDs.

However, it will speed up ripping on non-encrypter DVDRs, so it is recommended.

Thank you. Please allow me one more very basic question, I can not find a direct answer either:

Why do I need to rip a non-encrypted DVD ?
(simple copy is not enough?)

Thank you.

Thank you. I translate what you say by "You do not need to rip non-encrypted DVD".

I'm wondering what rip for non-encrypted DVD could means ... I'm imagining it could means the translation from UDF filesystem to NTFS filesystem (what Windows XP does). Or anything else ...

I do not know about the technical aspects of UDF vs. NTFS. Windows has no problems with DVDs though, so I guess it is UDF compatible.

A simple copy is fine for non-encrypted as long as you do not want to edit anything on the DVD. This will keep the DVD as is.

If you want to edit a DVD, this is when you want the files on the hard drive rather than a Disc image.

So if you only want a copy, then use Nero or DVD Decrypter in ISO Read then ISO Write mode. The advantage of DVD Decrypter is that it is a free program. I consider both to be of equal quality though.

Yes, I want to edit. This is the sequence I'm doing:

1. Capture (the VOB) using the DVD Recorder and DVD-RW midia.
2. Copy the VOB from DVD-RW midia to HD midia (2 copies, just in case I need backup)
3. Open the VOB using DVD Shrink
4. Cut the VOB on the GOPs as needed (to keep original encode)
5. Join (using VOBedit) the many VOBs resulted from step 4
6. "Fix" the VOB using IFOedit
7. Burn the VOB back using Nero (this step is the issue)

I could eliminate step 2, opening in DVD Shrink the VOB directly from the DVD-RW midia, but I prefer to handle that by the HD.

Everything works fine, except step 7. If I use Nero compilation type "DVD-Video" the playback is jerky. If I use Nero compilation type "DVD-ROM(UDF/ISO)" it's fine.
I would like to know why the compilation type "DVD-Video" that is suposed to be the right one, is not working.

I want to understand if the step 2 is the source of the issue, but I already used DVD Decrypter to "copy/rip" to HD and same result.

Thank you

The jerkiness may be due to you creating a non-standard DVD. There could be something you are forgetting to fix in the IFOs. I have never tried to cut scenes like this using shrink. I usually go for VobBlanker or just author a new DVD.

By jerky playback do you mean that there are slight pauses where you made the cuts??? If this is the case, perhaps you can fix this by changing the playback type in the PGC cells.

Open the IFO in IFOEdit and expand "VTS_PGCITI". Now select PGC 1 or whatever PGC is gining you the problems.

Next, go down to the Cell Playback section. On each cell you will see the heading "Cell_X: Cell Type (angle)... The first cell should have the value "2". Each cell after this should have the value "8". This will give it seamless playback. A cell where there is a new VobID should have the value of "10". This means playback is still seamless, but there is a new VobID.

Also, while in this part of the IFO, make sure that the sector addresses are linked. i.e. if the ending sector for cell 1 is 105, the starting sector for cell 2 should be 106 and so on...

Do the same in "VTS_C_ADT"

I have never done this before, so I do not know if it will work. You should always burn to a DVDRW first. Also, try out PGCEdit. This software may help with some editing:

Yes, but not in the cuts. By the way, the flow in the cuts are perfect because the GOPs are 100% independent each other, so cutting at each GOP (navigation point) will be perfect. No re-encoded. Same picture quality.

But as I finished with a jerky playback, I reduced the workflow to the following:

1. Capture (the VOB) using the DVD Recorder and DVD-RW midia.
2. Check playback quality on Recorder and on PC: Both good.

Then increased to:

1. Capture (the VOB) using the DVD Recorder and DVD-RW midia.
2. Copy the VOB from DVD-RW midia to HD midia (2 copies, just in case I need backup)
3. Burn the VOB back using Nero (this step is the issue)
4. Check playback quality on Recorder and on PC: Jerky

So assuming step 3 is correct (burn with Nero) I'm questioning step 2, the copy. If copy is OK, then the problem is really Nero, but WHY ?

Thank you

Hum, I just opened one of such VOB files generated by the DVD Recorder in DVDLab and DVDLab is complaining there are Open GOPs.

Could be this what is causing problems ?

Thank you

Found the answer !!

The UDF 1.02 spec limit file size at 1GB, but they also use some of those bytes, meaning not all 1GB is available to video.
Considering video uses 2K lba blocks, the max file size is 1GB-2KB.

For some reason, the Insignia DVD Recorder is using the full 1GB for video and Nero is correctly stating it's not compliant.

Fortunately, DVD Shrink comply with UDF 1.02 and if I ask DVD Shrink to backup such non compliant VOB, it will remove 1 single lba (2K) in the middle of the non compliant VOB, making it now compliant and Nero is happy with that.

Not sure, but it sounds the fault started with Sony that introduced such groove to use the full 1GB and unfortunately Insginia follow them.

In theory, anyone using Sony DVD Records should be suffering the same thing.

Thank you
