Hello people.
According to wikipedia.org, Sony has apparently discontinued their ARccOS copy protection system as a February 2006. (they got the message)
I have a question maybe someone can answer. According to lists of DVD movies that are protected by Sony ARccOS, Hitch is supposedly one of them. The thing is that I, and some others, was able to backup this particular DVD with DVD Shrink alone without a problem. For my part, I did this in early march '06 with a copy purchased in early February. My question is: If ARccOS was discontinued, does it generally mean that newer re-releases of of a particular movie which was previously protected by ARccOS are now distributed without it? Would it explain why I was able to copy it without AnyDVD or DVDFab?
Any thoughts ?

Always use good quality blank media. Verbatim is always a good call. Don't be seduced by those 50-spindles you find in the $2.99 bin at your local car wash! :)

who knows..... but I've been using DVDDecrypter alone and it's still the KING for me! I know it hasn't been updated like .... forever now..... and still it does a great job! I have used other programs for movies like: THE FOG, HITCH and others, but usually good 'ole reliable does the job for me! Sooooooo who cares about big bad ARccOS! So far there's always a way to burn! What I am scared about is when HD-DVD or Blue-Ray come out and they discontinue DVDs..... or not putting the new movies on DVD! I'm not in a rush for High Def in DVDs or Blue-Ray! I'll wait........ a longgggggggggggg time, before I go out and spend for that.

I think this rumor was untrue. The reason being that Fun with Dick and Jane has some ARccOS on it as well as some other new releases.
I heard the same thing though, so maybe in the future they will stop...
However, the ARccOS on the newer movies (Geisha, Dick & Jane) is slightly different than movies like The Cave, Bewitched, etc... They could be working on some new type of structure corruption or something.
Either way, there is always AnyDVD and DVDFab and DVDD can be temporarily updated via a PSL or the ARccOS can be manually removed with IFOEdit or by re-authoring.

Heres a strange one for you guys I've managed to rip the cave dick and jane and several other sony protected movies with only DVD Shrink and DVD43 ver 3.5.3 without resorting to AnyDVD dvd fab or vobblanker I dont know if its because I back up movie only or because I'm on PAL or is it that poor old underrated DVD43 handles the protection any comments ?

@aabbccdd,
Quote: BTW JaguarGod what i like is you use an older version of DVD Decrypter and you can STILL do all the new releases
I basically wanted to show that ARccOS is nothing new and that it will not make DVDD obsolete. Basically any software with IFO Parsing can handle it like DVDD 3.1.0.0 or higher and SmartRipper.
I also have ripguard guides using the same DVDD, but those are worless now because nothing has a problem with that except DVD XCopy or whatever that old 321 studios software was called.

Off topic, sort of. I wonder what types of copy protection await us with HD-DVD and Blu-ray? You know these guys have been busy trying to think up a system that can't be defeated.
I read that both HD DVD types will use a hard wire copy protection via HDMI inputs (and that you better have v.1.30 HDMI to handle the new lossless Dolby and DTS formats). I also read that both camps were thinking about down rezzing component video outputs to 1/4 the resolution of digital ouputs, since using component inputs circumvents the copy protection. Supposedly this down rezzing would be controlled from the DVD, but that makes no sense to me--how would the player know which outputs you were using?

You should probably check out the HD-DVD and Blue Ray forums. There is bound to be tons of info there on that subject.
However, I do know that they are going to be DRM packed with a strong encryption. Also, I do not think Component will allow for copys. There will probably be some type of analog copy protection or signal scrambling/distortion.

Dumb me, I didn't even check for a HD forum. I did write AnyDVD and they said they are working on it and that they have just now gotten reliable enough media to start testing.

I think by 98% of software, they meant 98% of all US retail software.
