Got sound, but no video plays! HELP ME!

Hi,
I am new to burning DVD's so you'll have to bear with my ignorance. I have been trying to burn our home movies to DVD, but with little to no success. I have the files saved to my hard drive in .avi format. I am using the Nero 7 trial version (I do plan to upgrade and pay for the full version, but want to see if I can figure this all out first!). The problem that I'm having is when I put the finished product in my dvd player, it will pull up the root menu, and allow me to click on the chapter, I can then hear the audio of the movie, but no video is played. The screen just displays the root menu, while I listen to my kids doing their various cute tricks. Any suggestions on how to fix this extremely frustrating problem? I am using Maxell DVD+RW discs.
