anyone no why i cant get nero to burn at 1x speed the slowest i can burn is 4x no matter what media i use. its the same for cd & dvd
using a pioneer 104

Some burners wont burn at 1x but then again if you are burning dvd I can see why that might be a problem!

Really? I'm using the firewire Pioneer burner and it's always selected the maximum speed depending on the media (1x/2x/4x).

Have you the latest firmware for the 104?

using uptodate firmware,just thought the slower the burning speed the more reliable the finished product would be

That may be true for cheap (and slow) media, but not for media certified for 4x.

Still, it's rather strange that all of your media report 4x speed. Do you get 4x under Nero for DVD-RWs as well?
