OK, I am currently having two problems (that may be related) with my PC. First one is this: I have a Maxtor 250 GB 16 MB cache HD and only 128 GB's show up as usable. A friend thinks it may have something to do with the OS settings. I have a Micro-ATX case, Barton 2600+, 2x512 MB memory, DVD DL and DVD-ROM optical drives, Sony floppy, GeForce 6600 GT 128 MB GPU, and Windows XP Pro. I have used only 40 GB of my HD. Any ideas? Second one is: my Barton 2600+ is supposed to be running at 1.92 GHz or so yet it is only operating at 1.5 GHz. I have tried to switch settings within the Bios but when I do, the PC will not boot up. Plus it does not specify what CPU setting I would like (i.e. instead of asking for GHz is has 133 as a default which works out to 1.5 GHz and then I have to set it higher but it allows incremental increases instead of stating what is standardly available/needed). So I set it to 166 GHz and it will not boot up. I have no idea what I am suppose to do to get my CPU operating at it's supposed normal setting. I am not wanting to overclock. Any ideas would be much appreciated. My mobo is a Biostar M7VIZ.

Couple of Questions... One, is your 250G HDD SATA??
Secondly.. Do you consider speeding the processor up to it's retail speed overclocking??? If so, then you better leave it alone.

There's alot of "overclocking" software out there, but if you are only speeding it up to stock clock you're technically not overclocking.

EDIT: DDP seemed to answer your HD size limit question while I was typing.. Sounds like SP1/2 would fix your HD up good.

In regards to overclocking, I am not saying that having it operate at it's designated speed in overclocking (i.e. the Barton 2600+ should be at 1.92 GHz or so). I just said that in case someone thought that I was wanting to overclock or tried to overclock. I know many out there who have overclocked the Barton series fairly easily. However, I am just saying that I want the standard not below standard which is what I have now. Oh, I used to have a xp 2000+ and that is what is showing up as what I have currently.

Have you updated your BIOS?? Go to www.biostar-usa.com and update your BIOS. If that doesn't help then we'll go into clock adjustments.

Yes, I have a software program that updates all the various parts of my pc from Audio to video. So that should be up to date. Also, I have Parallel ATA for the HD. I am in the process of acquiring service pack 2 but it has been tricky as this OS is not legit (which is a long story :-)

Okay.. If SP2 does not also fix your Processor speed(probably won't) go into BIOS and go to advanced Chipset Features.. Mayby advanced CMOS, every BIOS uses different works.. so it's hard to be exact.
But anyways, find where it says the processor speed, and where it says [AUTO] if it doesn't say auto if it says manual, change it to AUTO. Otherwise change it to manual, and adjust speeds below to fit.
There are also numerous OC windows based utilities that can adjust the clock on your cpu. I use Asus' Ai Booster, but I doubt that will work with your Biostar MOBO. Google Biostar and Overclock..
Type it in like this
Biostar M7VIZ > Overclock > Software
That should narrow your search down a bit.

the os has nothing to do with clock speed. has to do with bios settings.

Thanks, Byron. For your new build, is the Radeon x850xt a lot better than the Radeon x1600xt? I am hoping to get an q-xpack micro-atx case, Amd Athlon X2 3800+, 2 GB Corsair memory, (I already have brand new 36.7 GB Raptors), an external dvd drive (I have a sweet PSU that is ASPIRE ATX-AS500-SV 12V ATX12V 500W), and I was thinking of just getting the Radeon X1600XT because it has a 5 rating on Newegg, runs games like Doom3 well (I don't care for that game but it is the game that determines how well a GPU is - I play Counterstrike, Battlefield 2 and some RTS games), and is only $149. What do you think? I am not getting this until Vista comes out though so in the mean time, it would be nice to get my current system functioning optimally.

Yeah it is actually. The X850XT is the high end of the last generation. The x1600xt is just midrange, and the x850xt will out bench it by ALOT.
