Hi All,
Am trying to burn a video DVD Movie using the latest update to Nero 6 Burning Rom and everytime I try to burn (as DVD Movie compilation) The compilation runs to around 5% and then my USB2 Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-108 Drive kicks out at around 4% and I get a Device not available message. So far this has cost me 8 DVD 4.7Gb discs and one dual layer 8.5Gb Disc.
Have done a search for Device not available but cannot find any relevant threads. The Dual Layer Disc is a Ridata, the brand recommended for my burner. Can anyone help. I cannot get the Nero Log File as everytime this error occurs the PC locks up prompting me to switch off the Drive, swtich it on again in order to remove the disc and reclaim my desktop. It's a bit of a horror story and it's costing me money

Nero History if using Nero 7
C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory.txt
Make sure your firmware is up to date. Since there are a couple models similar to yours, I can't verify which firmware you may need. Visit http://forum.rpc1.org and search for your drive.
RiData DL media is problematic in a lot of drives. Verbatim DL is known as being the best.
What single layer media were you using?

I took your advice and updated the firmware - it was at ver 1.17 so I upgraded it incrementally to 1.18 and then 1.20 and tried again - thought i was on to something when the progress bar reached 22% then the nightmare recurred once again - another unwanted $10 Coaster...... obviously not the firmware! Once again I used a Ridata 8.5DL as this is the brand recommended for the pioneer.
Could it be something to do with Nero? I live in Venezuela and DL discs are extremely hard to come by. I only have 3 left and mail order is pretty expensive to here not to mention the tax - Discs are actually costing me around $25 each when all is taken into account.
Please someone - HELP!!!!

let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.
You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

Hi Creaky - This is more or less it from the the start of the burn - I ripped out about 100 or so Que again Later comments: Hope you or someone can make some sense out of this - may be something that's happening (yet again) because of windows security patches. I only know that up to about 3 weeks ago I hadn't had a single 'coaster' in about 5 months of using this burner.

....guess that brings us back to doh!!!! It does not exist! I did a find - found the line but it's the end of the document. As mentioned in my initial post that everytime this happens the PC freezes up. I have to switch of the USB2 Drive and switch it back on again, remove the disc to get back to the desktop. Invariably I have to restart too..................
Guess the prognosis ain't looking too good then!............

well for now we can start by getting rid of Nero's Incd software (packet writing software) -

hi, to get another section of logfile, and not waste any discs, try a 'simulation burn'; when you go to hit burn/write, untick burn/write and tick simulation, then it'll go thru the motions with a blank disc but won't write to the disc but will create a logfile entry.... and paste that here...

Not an option! - I went thru the motions and simulation is greyed out. Only option I have is determine maximum speed and write. This comes even after specifically selecting the simulation option when I set up new DVD movie project with Nero burn....... Guess I won't be generating a new log file this way!!!!
Again I have an 8.5Gb Ridata -R DL disc loaded as it's an LP hq movie I ultimately want to burn. The disc is recognised okay but simulation for some reason is just not an option.

Yeah - I was caught by that too (The ASPI Comments)! Will take your advice and d/l the older version- Amazing when you think the newer versions are supposedly intended to iron out the bugs. Hence my absolute hatred for all things Version 7!

The Horror Continues.............. Christopher Lee is nowhere in sight!
I fixed the aspi.............. uninstalled Nero once again - reinstalled as suggested with ver 6.6.0.18 and tried to burn a 4.2 GB file to a 4.7 re-writable......
Once again the process hangs on 1% for 30 minutes................. doing zilch and ultimately locks up my machine!
I don't get the Device not available message anymore though quite obviously it ain't available............. so we get back to My Computer Crashing and the same old routine as before to rescue my desktop.
I look for the nerohistory.log file in the newwly created Nero Directories - Nada!
Seems like a complete waste of time! Has the latest round of Windows Sp patches nuked the burning process once more??? Is it a Nero hiccup??? It's as though my machine suddenly developed an allergy to both Nero and My Burner!
Here at least is the latest version things as far as Infotool is concerned....

Update:
I decided to try something completely different..... First off I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 Notebook that has only 2 built-in USB connections. I run most of my USB connections through a D-Link DUB-H7 Hub and like I said have had no real problems until recently.
Everyhing from my Secondary HD, DVD Burner, Web cam to my printer live and depend on this connection. Coming to think of it I should have realised this might be the problem sooner as I had more than a few problems with my printer a few days ago, I continue to drop my internet connection, cannot burn to any disc....... and more besides.
Luckily I have an Adaptec PCMIA duo card also which takes 2 x USB connections and a 1364 connection (useless under SP2 - thank you Microsoft for that one!). Right now I am online obviously and I repeated the exercise in the post above and right now the process is at 91% and running smoothly it seems..... I have my burner connected directly to the PC and my secondary HD where the source folder lies connected through the Adaptec card.......... Lovely!!!
Brings me back nce again to the point that (excuse me please) that the latest round of Microsoft XP patches are F*****g with usb connectors now - it wasn't enough for them to render 1394 completely useless and just leave it at that!
Does the D-Link run of Firmware dependancies?........ I can't find out anything about it having surfed to this end for around 2 hours last night..... I have reset the hub a number of times in the past few days too with zero effect! No Idea therefore how to troubleshoot the problem further let alone fix it!
Creaky - that said a disc has finally burned succesfully. Maybe I'll now brave it and have another go for the 'big one' with this hookup. Thanks a million for your help buddy! I guess I got my ASPi fixed for one thing......
I will of course check back here for any thoughts you might have on the USB2 problem and to yell 'yay' or 'nay' on the DL burn....
Remember - watch your backs! Microsoft are after you with daggers. Maybe they're once more try to convince us of the uselessness of XP and it's vulnerabilities and try to convince us all that 'Hasta la Vista' is somehow going to be better! What suckers we all are, eh???

Hi Creaky,
Seems as if things are kind of 'burning' fine right now - any thoughts you might like to pitch in on the USB Hub end of things. I cannot find anything on the net relating to how to troubleshoot peripherals that suddenly stop performing properly when connected to the laptop or PC via a hub.
As mentioned it s more that a hunch that yet again Microsoft's 'security' updates have destroyed more functionality than anything these 'brilliand wonders' might potentially have fixed.......
I'm quite sure the only reason why the laptop can see my USB2 connections over the PCMIA is that it employs a different mode of communication with the USB devices than he hub
I serioulsy doubt Microsoft will ever get it right.

Thank's for helping out - even if the route we went down was the wrong one - at least I was able to find I had a problem with my ASPI Systems device and was able to repair that into the bargain.

hi, i use 2 USB2.0 enclosures. One has my trusty dvd-rom/cdwriter combo drive, the other has one of my dvd burners and my other dvd burner is internal to the PC. i get on great with USB2.0 burning, however i wouldn't use them thru hubs, tried before and it just caused too many problems
edit- doh, i read your post properly now, you mentioned problems with USB Hub. i guess that could be problematic, USB hubs have caused me loads of grief in the past, so i only connect important devices straight to onboard ports now, luckily my PC's have sufficient onboard ports.
