Hi, just wondering a quick way to find out what socket my cpu is. its a 2.4ghz pentium with 256mb cache.. poor i know but it does the job lol.

also i may as well ask this.. recently my cpu fan has been fanning like crazy when a few apps are open. it never used to do this. my thinking is to purchase a graphics card to take the load off the processor. as it fans at maximum when just football manager is loaded. im also purchasing a new heatsink and fan.. hence the above question lol.

thanks

most likey is a 478 socket. check your motherboard manual or computer guide as will have that info. check your cpu heatsink to see how dirty it is.

I have neither a motherboard manual or my computer guide. this is due to this computer being an ex local authority pc. any other suggestions?

I would suggest you just take the existing fan off and look at the top of the CPU.
Make sure you have some heatsink compound to fit it back on.
Chances are you will need to be careful about what cooler you get, as it will depend on board mounts and the room in the case.
The last points are the main reason you should take a look to start with, or you could end up wasting your money.
Failing that, certain coolers are compatible with both 775 & 478 CPUs.

AGP is faster than PCI, and the 4x slot will take a 8x card, but it will only work at half its potential bus speed.

pci runs at 33mhz & agp runs 2x, 4x or 8x that 33mhz.
