Hi, I'm a newie here. I am trying to copy a vob file from a DVD (made on Sony DVD recorder), to hard drive to compile a DVD. This particular VOB file plays fine on DVD player, nero show time, and in DVD shrink, But when I select in DVD shrink, I get an error message - DVD shrink encounter an error and cannot continue, Failed to read "F:\"
Also in DVD decryptor, the VOB file does not show up. Neither in windows explorer. The DVD disc appears clean with no scrathes. This is not the first time I've seen this!
The answer is quite simple; most DVD-Video discs you buy are copy protected. But Wondershare DVD to iPod Ripper help you fixed the problem easily. But you should know the copyright laws first.
You can download free from here

Thank for the response. No, the DVD's are home made - I made on my own DVD recorder copying some programming from the Satalite DVR - free of any commercial blocks. In fact, just a few minutes ago I was trying to copy some VOB files to the HDD with windows explorer, and son of a gun, I get an error message and that the last VOB file cant be copied. But yet it can be viewed in media player.
I've got a very similar problem and wonder if an answer will help both of us. I've recorded Hi8 video onto DVD-R media using a Panasonic DMR-ES20 set-top DVD recorder (definitely no encryption). The disks have been finalized and play fine on other set-top DVD players. My plan was to edit the movies but I can't find the data (VOB file).
On my computer (WIN2000) using explorer, the disk shows 4.01 Gb available and also 4.01 Gb used (I knew that already because the disk plays for an hour just fine using any set-top DVD player).
The Video_TS folder shows only the following files:
When I double click the largest file, a short "preview" (approx 10 seconds) of the video opens and plays in CyberLink DVD5. This viewer was supplied with the video editing software I purchased (Serif MoviePlus 4.0) I can edit this "preview" in MoviePlus but I can't find the rest of the data. BTW, I have not been able to view the complete video using my computers DVD player/recorder.
I've made sure hidden files are viewable but for the life of me I can't figure out what's going on. After burning 8-10 DVD's with the same result I took them to my brother-in-laws and the video does play full length, just fine on his XP equipped machine. I didn't write down the file details from explorer but the data showed up. I came back home, installed a new DVD-RW in my son's XP equipped machine and found that I could view a "preview" and the exact same files listed above that I found in my WIN2000 machine. There was no joy in mudville =:^)
I'm definitely a newbie and I'm stumped...any ideas? TIA...Tony
Hi,
Make sure you format DVD-RW media on your recorder in "Video" format. I have a Sony, and it defaults to format in "VR" mode. I have to then reformat it to "Video". Then make sure you finalize on your DVD recorder before looking at it on your computer.
Hope this helps.
I am now thinking that My problem is that I can see all the VOB files in Win Explorer, except the last one. Maybe it has to do with DVD recorder. But us sure is strange that it plays normally in both the recorder and on the computer.
take care
I appreciate your input...didn't mean to jump into your thread but I've got the MoviePlus4 technical support helping now, too. If I get any info I'll be sure to post here...Tony
