is it an upgrade or fresh install?

did you format the hard drive before installing windows?

was it a new hard drive or was there another operating system on it when you start?

its real hard to tell what you did,you statement is very vague

you may still have errors on the hard drive,so you want to fdisk the hard drive and install a fresh copy of win xp.when you dont clear everything off the hard drive, sometimes the errors dont get completely fixed unless you do an fdisk and a fresh install of winxp.you could try to hit..."r"...and repair the master boot record but a fdisk and fresh install is so much more reliable.hope this helps you

Unplug any external drives/card readers.
Go into BIOS and set the HDD priority to make your c:\ drive the first choice, then make sure you select boot from HDD as the first boot option.

fdisk is a clearing of the hard drive[format disk]ok?
so install windows ,you should come to a screen that has a partition the drive on it.clear the partion,in others words delete the partition.ok?then make a partition on your hard drive.it will ask you to do a format on that disk.dont do the quick format,do the full format.dont format in fat use ntfs...ok?follow?next install

now when you install windows xp on your hard drive,it will be a fresh install on a new partitioned formatted disk and not an overwrite.ok?

If the computer has a floppy drive, try the 30 day trial of Drive Scrubber. http://www.iolo.com/ds/

Then install Windows.

you either press f1 or delete key to go into bios mode as the dude above was talking about.turn off machine and press this key repeatly when you see something on screen.this will bring you into bios mode.if this errors and dosnt post, then you need to update your bios but i doubt that very much.once in bios,do as the guy said.

go to your boot screen and change you boot sequence to c:/ drive being first,so the winxp disk works.if the pc is old ,you have to change it back to hard drive later after windows is installed.maybe this is the problem....hope this helps....also you can go to the compaq site to see if they have any utilities that you can download on to a floppy and then reformat your hard drive with it.you might have a bad virus and sometimes they are a b.... to get out and reformat but it will happen.sometimes the simplest thing stops it from proceeding, like a scratch in the disk or it had some dirt on the disk and cleaning the disk might fix the problem, but dont worry youll get it man.hope i helped you

is this a windows xp disk or a store bought restore disk?is this machine a store bought that you are trying to format the hard drive with an copy of windows xp?im a little confussed cause its pretty simple, the program sort of does it for you.on the back of the hard drive,do you have the jumpers set as master?in the bios does it see the hard drive as the master?or is this a secondary hard drive?its real easy when i have my hands on it.kind of hard guessing what you are doing...im trying to help you though...lol...what are you stats btw ?

im using a cd not a restore disc and the computer is an old one so its not very powerful and the setup installs perfectly then when it says rebooting to finish the install is when the error comes up and the harddrive isnt secondary .

It's starting to sound like either a physical problem with the drive, or the MBR is shot all to heck. Simply formatting the drive, or removing and recreating partitions may be what's making matters worse.

This is why I am suggesting that you scrub (completely wipe - low level format) the drive. You'll see a new screen during XP setup indicating that the drive never had a partition on it...(XP detects that it's a brand new drive). It'll take you from there.

couldnt open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
NTLBR: couldnt open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)

this is your problem and heres what microsoft says,if you scroll down you will see your problem about half way down.its called reveiwing and correcting the boot ini. settings but its so much easier to scrub the hard drive and start all over but here you go:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/c296...

heres the drive scrubber, free trial for 30 days
