4 GB flash Drive capacity problems

I recently got a 4 GB Corsair Flash Voyager Drive and was excited to start using it. It came with a CD that had drivers and a manual. I wanted to be sure to use it correctly so I read the manual, but just as I expected, it confirmed that from Windows 98 on up, no driver installation was required, because later OS-es all support plug n' play USB mass storage devices... So I was good to go. I inserted the drive, looked at the drive properties, 4 GB, and came pre-formatted to the FAT (not FAT32) file system. I proceeded to put a bunch of mp3's on it, but after I had about 600 MB or so on there, I could put no more, getting an error message stating, the directory or file could not be created. My first initial gut reaction was "Oh great !!! I got a defective unit." But then I started to think what if I needed to format the drive to FAT32 or NTFS first. My brother suggested that instead of just dumping a gazillion mp3's on the drive directly, that I should create separate folders and do it that way, though I couldn't figure out what this would have to do with anything. Shouldn't I just be able to put files (regardless of number) directly onto the drive? I have thought about returning the product for an exchange, or even a refund. I'd rather not though, because it was a great deal. $99.99 for a 4 GB Flash drive from a reputable maker of memory products. Anyone have similar problems, or have any ideas?

Have you tried formatting the drive to NTFS? The original FAT system will have a file limitation for folders, so you'll need the newer allocation systems for unlimited files in a single folder.

Thanks Morph... I formatted it to FAT32 and everything seems to be working fine. I also went on http://www.asktheramguy.com, the support site for Corsair memory products, and found a thread there that addressed this particular issue with flash drives over 2 GB. Thanks again for the speedy response.
