This weekend we were in another home theatre and their picture quality was vastly superior to what we are getting.

Our Projector is a Sharp AN-CM200
Our Screen is LXS 49.75X92 Stewart Luxus Snapper w/Studiotek 130

Their Projector is InFocus
Their Screen is a Firehawk (silver/gray color)

Any thoughts as to why their picture quality is so much better? Is it the projector or the screen? We have adjusted focus, color, etc. but there is still not the quality of picture.

Any advice is welcomed.

Hello! I think you'd be more likely to get responses in the "displays" forum...some really knowledgable folks in the area of screens, projectors etc. Will ask a moderator to move you to the right place.

All projectors and screens are not created equal. The quality of picture is dependant on many things. Screens are the easy part. If you have a screen and it is made of an inferior material or the gain is low then you will notice a big difference in the picture quality. The best thing I can suggest to you is that you find a screen that has a gain of 1.0 or higher. My screen boasts a gain of 1.3. This makes the contrast much richer as well as allows a brighter picture with less strain on the bulb. It also allows you to see the picture better under conditions with more light in the room. The other thing is that you should clean your screen periodically especially if you are smokers or live in a dusty area. Nicotine and sunlight will yellow screens over time and cause unpleasant color shifts. I also found this quote off a home theatre site in regards to the firehawk and the studiotek. "By reputation the Studiotek 130 is the closest thing to a perfect screen on the market."

Now as far as projectors go, there are so many differences that it is hard to explain but quite simply the InFocus probably has either a better contrast ratio which vastly improves on blacks and whites. Your LCD has a low level of only 250 ANSI Lumens and a low contrast ratio of less than 1000:1. Plus that the InFocus may be DLP as opposed to LCD. LCD has a notorious problem with color shift if the bulb has been left on for extended periods of time. If you went to DLP you would not notice any color shift. The only thing is that you may experience Rainbow effects. I would suggest trying a newer projector with your screen, call around or visit showrooms that have a decent projector setup and see what differences there are.

Personally I suggest the BenQ MP610 only because it has a high contrast ratio of 2000:1 and it also has 2000 ANSI Lumens which is quite bright. The lamp also boasts a lifetime of 3000/4000 hours normal/econo. Not to mention the price is nice.

Cleaning the screen....
How do I do it?
Do you recommend any particular cleaning products?
Hurry! My husband has just gone for the power washer! He is bringing it into the house now.
