The windows update should'nt of created a problem for you, with reguards to burning DVDs.

You say you haven't changed anything (media brand, burning application, burning speed), your older burns still work, but the new ones all of a sudden don't. Well something changed, I'm thinking that something maybe up with your burner, even though you probably get a message that the burn process completed, this doesn't mean all is well.

To test the burner, see if you can play any original DVD in it correctly or even some of those older DVD you burned and still play in a standalone player. If the burner is having a problem with playing anything, well then its time for a new one.

You don't state what burning app you use, but since you mention DVD Decrypter, I'll assume that you're burning ISO images?? Can you possily post a log from that app, it's found in your decrypter log folder.

I use burner that came with my computer...dell.. it is still burning I can play in my portable dvd player .. and I can watch movies fine on it.. someone had something to say about dla in another forum.. could this be a problem? there used to be checks on both my drives with the use with dla they won't check any more..I used to even make backups from the backups using sonic record now.. just an exact copy.. they would play but they won't now.. trying another movie now so I can get log from decypter as soon as its done I will post log..

ok media I use is cheap but its same I always used imation DVD+R 8x 4.7GB .. firmware? lol what is that? burnspeed? um it takes about 1/2 hr per dvd? lol told you I am no pro.. but been doing it to protect my dvd movies for about a year and all of sudden it stopped working ..I am so lost..was so simple and one thing goes whacky and it becomes he!!

According to your log:
You're using DVD shrink to rip/transcode, create an image, then autoburning to disk using DVD decrypter.

Question
HERE:
Destination Media Type: DVD+R (Speeds: 2.4x)

You're using DVD+R media, is the max speed for the media 2.4x or greater?

I ask this because decrypter is set to burn at MAX speed (not good), according to the log:

Average Write Rate: 3,346 KB/s (2.4x) - Maximum Write Rate: 3,493 KB/s (2.5x)

Are these disks rated for a max write speed of 2.4x? To me, it appears as though the disk isn't identified correctly.

There are two things that should be done first:
1) Update the burner's firmware if one is available. You can have decrypter search for you buy going to:tools-->scroll down to search for firmware updates
2) Change the MAX setting for write speed to 4x at first and see if the burn is successful and the disk plays. In general, you should set the write speed to 1/2 the rated speed of the media to be safe.

You can have decrypter search for you buy going to:tools-->scroll down to search for firmware updates " no such option under my tools. I feel dumb asking for help here.. have been coming here for a long time and usually can find my solution w/o having to sound stupid and ask for help.. Firmware updates from link at dvd decryptor:
Tools/Drive/check for firmware updates.
You need to look harder before you say it isn't there. Flashing is the process of upgrading your drives' firmware. DVD decyptor or device manager will tell you what version you have.

DLA??? are sure you don't mean DMA?

What is DMA mode?
DMA (Direct memory access) mode is a high performance mode for transferring data to and from devices, in particular, to CD and DVD burner devices.

The burner devices can function in either DMA or PIO modes. DMA mode allows the processor to transfer large pieces of data with very little software overhead - therefore requiring low CPU utilization. In this mode, high speed burning can be performed in background with other programs running.

PIO mode requires CPU processing for every few bytes sent to the device, so that CPU utilization becomes very high when trying to burn at high speeds.

Make sure your burner has DMA mode enabled, here's a guide;
http://www.burstcopy.com/dma/xp/

Flashing is just another way of saying updating (keeping it simple), so if you flash your burner (firmware flash), you're updating it's firmware.

You state that the media is rated at 8x, but your log shows that the write speed never got above 2.5x, to me, it appears as though the disk isn't identified correctly by the burner, something about the media's characteristics has changed even though you state you're using the same brand. This can usually be corrected by performing a firmware update, if not, change the brand of media you're using to mabe verbatim.

For firmware, you currently have: version 103D as shown
_NEC DVD+RW ND-2100AD 103D (E:)

Try updating to version 104E

Ok, DLA stands for Direct Letter Access, it's packet writing software. Dell offers it with Sonic Solutions and /or Record Now 7.0 (Dual Layer) software.

Do you use Sonic or Record Now software?

Your DLA app maybe corrupt, uninstall it using the windows add/remove programs option, you can get a fresh copy from DELL from the link provided.

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=1...

You can get some info on it here;
http://www.argentuma.com/backup/software/dla.html

In order to install that firmware update you'll need a binflash tool/gui, you can get it here along with a guide on how to do it;

The linked page clearly indentifies the binflash download link. please pay more attention before pleading ignorance. Find the paragraph:
Download Binflash
First of all you need to download a version of Binflash that matches your Operating System. At the moment there are commandline versions for Windows, DOS, Linux and Mac available. You should ensure that you are always using the latest version, in case some important bugs have been fixed.
Now clink the underlined link and download the windows version. follow all instructions to the letter.
