YADTDT by c.trigger (Yet another DVD to DivX tutorial )
Tools used:
Dvd shrink 3.2
VirtualDub-MPEG2 (http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable/)

Optional AC-3 ACM Codec (http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/AC3ACM/)
[you might need this I don?t know.]
Divx 6.x
Lame MP3

Part 1. ripping the dvd

1.Open dvd shrink

2. Setting up DVD shrink (this step very important with feature movies, or you will be left with multiple VOB?s which are useless)
edit ->preferences->

output files, and uncheck split VOB files into 1 gig chunks

3. Ripping the DVD
on the main menu bar of DVD shrink click re-author.

4. Under DVD browser select the DVD drive you wish to use, in this case my drive has a name of the DVD I will be ripping.

Double-click on the drive.

5. When you double-click on the drive you'll get a list of all the menus and titles on your DVD, my DVD contains three short films and a making of.

Double-click title you wish to rip.

6. That title should shows up under the DVD compilation window, if its there click backup.

7. Under backup, make sure ?select backup target? is set to hard disk
Browse to where you would like your output files to be saved
and Un-tick create video_ts and audio_ts folders (there not needed for the purpose of this tutorial)

click ok

8. DVD shrink is now backing up your dvd.

done !

Now you should have a folder with five or so files, the only one you need is the VTS_01_1.VOB(thats the video) everything else can be deleted.

END OF DVD SHRINK.

Part 2. VirtualDub-MPEG2 ( the MPEG version is very important for this tutoral)

I won't go into too much detail but virtualDub is very powerful editing program can be used remove intros and credits as well as any type of video conversion.

1. Open VirtualDub-MPEG2 By clicking on ?VirtualDub.exe?
2. navigate the folder and open the VTS_01_1.VOB that ?shrink made

2a.let it parse the vob

3.Short over view of VirtualDub interface

in out points are use to edit which part of the video you want to convert, if you want to convert a small part of your movie.

SETTING THE COMPRESSION (audio and video)
4. from the menu Video -> compression

5. Pick your codec and configure with the desired settings in this case DivX.

DIVX settings.
Main :Set your bit rate
Codec: other settings
Video: resolution, aspect ratio, cropping(useful in comming from vhs tape.)
Click ok and return to the main window .

6. Audio -> set it to full processing,(or you can?t set any audio compression)

7.Audio-> compression

Pick the codec you want to use, in this case I am using Lame mp3, on the right you get to pick your bit rate. I used 192kbs for my bit rate which is sounds good and doesn?t take up to much HDD space.
When done click ok

8. well we set the video and audio compression all that?s left to do is render the video.
File save avi [F7] pick our out put folder

Click OK
A status window pops up telling you how long its goin to take

When that?s done you should have a shiny new DivX file, which can then be put on a media center or burnt to DVD (note this last step can take a long time so be patient)
Enjoy . c.trigger

AutoGK should be faster and better quality since it uses fast recompress (no RGB24 colourspace conversion). Also it probably does some minor denoising to help compressability and I think uses VBR mp3.

Guess you could with the above, but the cursor is on CBR mp3. VBR I would imagine is not an option for LAME ACM and I am not sure how well ABR would work via ACM either.

This is fascinating and creative! Interesting to rip with Shrink.
Of course, the traditional way is DVDDecrypter in IFO mode. You select only the main title, and remove or Demux to separate file any audio track.
The result is VOB files with CSS, Macrovision etc. removed.
I can encode XviD AVI from multiple sequential VOB files - but you could make 1 big VOB if you wished.
I see you are doing 1-pass rip - this is unfortunate.
You can make your 1-pass manual rips with VirtualDub-MPEG2, I will continue to do my audio with CDex (LAME) and my 2-pass XviD video with GordianKnot, thank you.
