Convert to mp4 using Recode 2?

Hi guys. I've searched the forum and haven't seen anyone mention Nero Recode 2 for video conversion to mp4 format. I just started experimenting yesterday and have successfully converted two .AVI compressed videos that were previously not recognized by iTunes. If anyone else has had success or failure please, let's hear your stories. (This was originally posted in the "Guide - DVD & Video 2 iPod (new)")

Welcome to the iPod forums, ChiknLitl!
I've never heard of it, but I will still just stick with PQ DVD. This is one of the best programs out there for Video to iPod Conversion. It is easy to use and converts at high quality.
Nero Recode 2 may be a good program, but I've never used it. I have used PQ DVD to convert over 20 movies to my iPod and never had one problem. For this reason, I highly reccomend PQ DVD over any other converter.

Thanks for the welcome. I've used recode to compress many DVD's. Since I don't save the VOB files on my hard drive I generally don't worry how big the files are. Now I have a new iPod video and just discovered that it can recode to mp4. I am not sure how reliable it is with all different file types as I have only just begun to use it. Recode looks to be similiar in use to PQDVD judging from the screenshots in the guide I mentioned above. If anyone tries it, just use the DVD to Nero digital option. As with PQDVD it lets you cut out frames from beginning or end of the film, adjust resolution for either 768 kbps or 2.5 mbps. You can use it with DVD or HDD files.

Is the program (Nero Recode 2) a free program? If it is, I will definantely test it out to compare it with some of the other applications. Post back so I can download even a trial version if I have to.

It comes with Nero 7 and previous versions. You can download the free trial version of Nero 7 at: Nero.com/nero7/enu/nero7-demo.php" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://ww2.Nero.com/nero7/enu/nero7-demo.php They advertise it for $80 but it's usually on sale somewhere for half of that, or you can get a keygen from limewire for $0.

Thanks for the heads-up, my friend. I have never tried this program out for myself, however, I have heard good thing about it from others such as yourself. I have around 3 tutorials to write within the next few days for various reasons, so I am tied down as far as testing is concerned. However, when I do get the opportunity, I'll try it out, and if I feel it will benefit others, I'll write a decent guide instructing people on how to use it. :-)

O.K. Here's the scoop on recode 2 if anyone is interested. I found it works well if you have the original source material, i.e. the DVD or rip from DVD on HDD. It's a bit slow but you can output to many different formats such as iPod, PSP/memory stick, flash, etc, and it opens many types of .AVI files. (If you are having trouble with codecs I suggest you get FFDShow available at the AD download page, it's free!) However, I have several episodes of the family guy dowload to my HDD and it is hit or miss whether the audio will sync with the video after transcoding these. There is no framerate adjustment allowed as far as I can see. BTW, PQDVD transcoded the out of sync episodes flawlessly, and at 30 fps. So there it is, if you have PQDVD stick with it, if not, get it.

Finally I can rest easy. With the updated version of Nero 7, the DVD to Nero digital (mp4) the video IS in sync with the sound. Not that anyone cares since this thread hasn't been touched since ? May. Anyway, it's always nice to have more tools and this program provides a lot of nice features for adjusting pic quality, screen size, sound enhancement, etc. I hope someone is paying attention.

ChiknLitl, I have been using Nero Recode to convert my DVD's to iPod for a couple of months now. At first I was using ImTOO DVD to ipod converter. Every movie that I converted with this app was either jumpy or out of sync. So then I tried Cucusoft iPod Video Converter + DVD to iPod Suite. The results were the same, jumpy or out of sync. Then I tried experimenting with Nero. I've been using Nero for a few years now to edit and or burn audio and video files, I had no idea that you could make mp4's with it, "DUH". Once I figured it out, "it was so easy, even a cave man can do it".
First, open Nero
Under Applications, click Nero Recode.
Next, choose
Recode Main Movie to Nero Digital.
Next, click
Import DVD
Next,
Choose the DVD-Drive which contains the DVD to import or a VIDEO_TS folder on your hard drive.
Recode will analyse the video.
Next, ensure that the Category is set to Apple iPod, and the Profile is set to iPod video.
Next, Choose a folder that you want the video to be saved in.
Next, Nero Recode will do it's job, (about 20 minutes).
You're done!!! Just open iTunes and drag the mp4 to you're iPod.

Has any one tried this on AVI files? If so what are the results you're getting? I have tried this on one and it was only about 13 min into the show the audio was out of sync.

Are you using the latest update? I just converted 7 .avi movies for a trip I took and only one was slightly out of sync, and ony for a short period.

That's what I've got too. Have you tried playing with the settings for quality, etc? Are you using .AVI's ripped from CD's? The one that was out of sync for me was a bad theater cam job.
