Is there any known way (hardware adjustment or some sort of crack) to get a DVD player that can not read DVD-R's to be able to read them?

I have a JVC XV-421 DVD player. It's old, I know, and newer ones are not expensive, but I like it and would rather tinker with it than buy a new one outright.

Here's the dilemma: It plays DVD, VideoCDs and audio CDs, but not MP3s. Since there is no way to get the machine to play MP3s outright (or maybe there is, but I can't find one), I'd planned on converting my extensive MP3 collection to the highest-quality MP2 format, and creating a DVD with the MP2s as the audio (and just a black screen--.bmp--as the video). Then I could combine each album as a "Title" and each song in each album as a "chapter" under that title, making the whole thing searchable by remote. The DVD player's already hooked up to the stereo and thus, 40 CDs worth of music on a single DVD-R....but....the player doesn't read DVD-R (it doesn't read any recordable DVDs of any kind).

Is there anyway around this??? (MP3s on DVD seems like it is a much cheaper and easier option than springing from some HDD-based digital music library. Well, at least it still seems like a cheaper option...its becoming less and less easier by the minute...

Thanks for the help!

You might be able to fool your DVD player if you use DVD+R discs and booktype them to DVD-ROM ...

Two problems with that...

1)I don't know what "booktype" means (I was going to post my intial question in the Newbie section, but didn't think I'd get much help...maybe I'm in over my head).

2)My DVD writer burns only DVD-R discs.

Am I SOL?

There's a link in my sig that explains booktyping ... and you can get a killer BenQ DVD burner at NewEgg for around $40 that produces DVDs that are readable by all but the worst DVD players ...

I just bought a JVC XV-421 at a pawn shop last week. I have been consistently playing DVD+R's ever since with hardly any problems. It would not play a DVD+RW though. I haven't tried any DVD-R's because I prefer not to use them. My dvd recorder does not burn as well with them. The only problems that I've had with the DVD+R's is that they take quite a while to load and they won't forward or reverse search recordings that I made in 3 hour mode. Other then that it plays perfect. I can't get over how quiet it is.
