1080P vs. 720p/1080i What is really going to happen??

I have been trying to come to a decision between 1080p or 720p. I hear different opinions and I just want to know... (its hard enough to decide on weather or not to get a HDTV in Plasma or LCD!!!)
1. With a viewing distance of 4-6 feet and a 43 inch HDTV is it really going to matter visually between 1080p and 720p? This goes for all content including HD content, HDDVD, SD, DVD's...
2. Will this be.. or will it MAYBE be the industry standered?
(if they come out with stations broadcasting in HD @ 1080p it would be nicer to have a 1080p right?) And if so how many years are we talking? They barely have HD 720p off the ground right now as far as number of channels offered.
3. Will there be a device that fully utilizes this resolution in the near future? IE HD-DVD? Blue Ray? PS3?(will these players output in 1080p?)
4. and lastly, what becomes of regualr 720p/1080i if the industry goes 1080p?

1. I have seen 1080p over 720p and the diference is big IMO. Jusmping from standard def to 720p brings you that wow factor and 1080p just blows u away. Having a 720p lcd already, im a bit annoyed i didnt wait and go for 1080p after seeing the difference. However, i have shown many people 720p video and they say its like 3d tv.
2. Sky are the only ones offer HD atm at 720p, i cant see them chanding it anytime soon so maybe a 720p set maybe right for you untill you eventually upgrade in the future.
3. Blu-ray, hd-dvd and the ps3 will all offer 1080p, but thats not to say every movie and every game will be 1080p. most i would imagine will be 720p to begin with. Watch out with the ps3 though, i have seen some debates that it will not output 1080p as sony claimed. Just a rumour though so take that last comment with a pinch of salt!
4. 1080p video would be downscalled to your desired size, ie 720p if ur set cannot handle 1080p.

There isn't even a 1080p source available yet and there won't be until Blueray or HD-DVD players are put out on the market. The HD-DVD players that are out now can not put out 1080p. As far as my choice on 1080p vs. 1080/720p... I think I will either wait or buy the 1080i just because I want a plasma and they do not offer plasma 1080p yet. I have no room for anything not wall mounted. Until I can actually see a 1080p source on a 1080p display I can't buy s 1080p display.

I personally preffer 720p over 1080i. I dunno what it is, after seeing a picture displayed with progressive scan, you tend to notice an interlaced picture more. I guess you will have to judge for yourself.
With a set with a max resolution of 1366x768 can display both 720p and 1080i. 720p will be the closest resolution to your screens native resolution and should display a better picture. 1080i however is a much bigger resolution (1900x1080i, compared with 1280x720p)) and needs to be downscaled before it will display on your screen. I think all high def screens have this function so there is no need to worry.
When making a purchase, make sure the resolution is a minimum 1280x720 otherwise it wont be true high def, even if the manufacturers say so ie pioneer claim their 43" plasma is high def even when it only has a max resolution of 1024x1024! A lot of screens, mainly plasmas also claim to be HD ready but are only HD compatible. That is, they have a max resoltion of 852x480, which in reality has less horizontal lines compared to a standard def PAL tv. They say its HD ready because it can display HD sources but they will be downscalled to fit the screens actual resolution.
Really watch out if your buying in store. i have seen salesmen in the likes of dixons tell their customers that they are buying a HD telly when really they're buying an HD compatible set!

Dont quote me on this, but i think this set is only capable of displaying 540 lines (progressive). This is like what i mentioned earlier about HD ready and HD compatible. I will do more research first just in case im speaking crap, but im almost positive that im right.
It will display all other resolutions except 1080p, but they will be displayed in a rescaled 1080i image. This is what i have gathered from the description but i will look into it a bit more when im back from the pub :)

So ur sayin that this tv will olny show a signal in 540p or 1080i? (you olny see signals in 540p or 1080i)
For example if my xbox360 is putting out a video signal in 720p it will be displayed in 540p or 1080i?
Is that what you are saying?
(sorry im not to sharp when it comes to all the resoultions and stuff regaurding tv's, lol)

It doesn't display progressively at all its a CRT. Everything over 480i is up-scaled to 1080i
