I need a good cheap drd burner..any help or recommendations would be real appreciated...I was looking at newegg.com for dvd burners but I dont know which one is the best???

I would go with pioneer or plextor they are the 2 of the best in the market still. I have to pioneer drives and have not caused me a problem so far.

Ben-Q 1650,1655's can be found between $35.00 and $50.00 Ive also had very good results using Nec's.You can find the Nec 3550 on sale at newegg somtimes for around $38.00

Well Plextor may not b cheap i agree then i would go with Pioneer cause that has come down dramatically. But i can say that from an Australian market perspective.

Not having used a pioneer, I cannot speak for them, but I can attest to the BenQ and the NEC and LG. Great burners all. The BenQ wins hands down for scanning purposes however. So for versitility I would choose the BenQ.

The NEC's are also excellent drives for the money...but a BenQ 1655 is on my wish list.

I got that NEC 3550a from Meritline for $38 - $12 rebate = $26 ! What a steal ! A good burner for the price of a reader, and it does the DVD-R disks better than BenQ.
I also got the BenQ 1650 from them for $38. It has features nobody else has, such as Solidburn. It does DVD+R disks well and booktypes them as DVD-ROM.
These two burners have got to be in the "best for the money" category.

StanH1000 I agree the NEC does Dvd -R disks better than BenQ.It's hit are miss using -R disks in my 1640's I burn mostly +R now anyway though.The -R's I use the NEC 3540 for once there used up ill only buy the +R's.My first choice for a new burner would be the Ben-Q 1650 or 1655 and use +R's booktyped.

Benqs definitely lag at the dash format. They'll burn and play ok on the drive itself,but stand alone compatability is cut in half compared to the plus format booktyped to dvd-rom.
I have yet to find a certain media that any of the 4 benqs don't like. This includes: Cmags/AML/UME/MBI along with the quality MCC/TY/Hitachi/Ritek/and ricoh. They'll burn anything you throw at them,but some of my stand alones do show the quality differences of those MID codes between the quality ones,and the crappy ones.

i personally use my Pioneer dvr-109 (cross-flashed with the Buffalo firmware for booktyping revision 8.58 right now), even though i ONLY burn DVD-R format with it~ :)
pioneers are GREAT drives for burning DVD-R format, for DVD+R format, BENQ (i have 1640 & 1650) is THE way to go~ :)
i have an older NEC 3520a, it's a solid drive on my 2nd computer, but i would personally rank it on par with my Liteon SOHW-1693S and my Sony dru-710a (which is a rebadged Liteon 1633S btw) :)
but, in terms of AFFORDABILITY and QUALITY, Benq is the clear winner here and that is what i would suggest too~

Does anyone think that the Solidburn feature of newer BenQ burners will enable them to do a better job with DVD-R media?
I have #250 MIJ Fugi 8X DVD-Rs that are TYG02. I could use my Pioneer DVR-108 or NEC 3550a, but am anxious to give the BenQ 1650 a workout.

i don't see why it wouldn't? i figure over time the Solidburn utility could "learn" the TYG02s and optimize the burn strategy to accomodate as such...while i have no doubt in my mind that the MID "TYG02" is already in the current firmware tables for the newer Benq drives, i will have to agree with the other Benq owners that i have BETTER quality results using my pioneer dvr-109 or my liteon drives for DVD-R format~ :)
that's just MY experience on it, the Benq doesn't burn DVD-R POORLY, it's just not as good as the backups on DVD+R format~ :) minor compromise, but still well within ACCEPTABLE averages of burn quality.

hey im new to dvd burning and i want to find a good inexpensive buy also
I found a BenQ DW1650 BK burner here:

Someone said that the 1650 was a good buy? And what is "SolidBurn" tehnology?
I'd appreciate any other opinions or info regarding these products.

Benq 1650 will do that job. No more messing around with the dash format. After booktyping the plus media to dvd-rom,good luck on finding a player that won't recognize your backups.

The NEC will bitset if you use the Liggy's and Dee's firmware from rpc1.org. That'll also take out ripguard too. The NEC is a great drive and is/was $30 at Tigerdirect.com. It's I think $33 at chiefvalue.com or mwave.com. The Benq isn't bad either, I plan to get one (though not at newegg!)
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.
