Hi everyone. I have a problem with MGS2:Substance game. I've downloaded .nrg image and burn it to double layer DVD+R (cuz it's allmost 6 Gb). But game doesnt run on my PS2. I can open DVD on my DVD-ROM but no luck with PS2. Screen goes black after reading DVD and title "Playstation 2" after that everything is freezing and nothing happens...
Any advise?
Thx for ur answers.
Edit:
I've burned PS2 games before on DVD-R 4.7 Gb and have no trouble. Only with this one. (There's no more games on DVD DL I have)

Your PS2 wont read writable duallayer discs.
Any game bigger than a DVD-5 will need to be rebuilt to make it fit on the DVD-R media you have used before.
PC Specs: CPU-C2D E8400, M/B-P5N-E SLI, RAM 4Gig OCZ Platinum rev2 ,VGA- Nvidia 8800GT 512MB, HDD- Hitachi Deskstar SATAII 1TB, 250Gig Maxtor IDE HDD.
Corsair HX520 PSU, Liteon Lightscribe DVD Writer, Pioneer BluRay drive.

either that or have a good modchip installed like DMS4 Pro or Matrix Infinity.
They will play dual layer back ups.
If you have any chip that can play original dual layer games like GT4, then you can patch the ISO with a program called
Toxic DL Patcher.
If you use Swap Magic you are just out of luck and have to shrink the game to fit a normal DVD5

Hi again. After reading all this and some trying I've concluded that I'm Noob =)
Ok. Here's situation. I have .nrg image of MGS2:Substance. This image is 5.99 Gb. If I'm trying to mount it in Alcohol it's said that's size of DVD is 2.99 only. I dunno why. But when I make image from this mounted image I get 4 Gb image (?). I've heard about some system track on PS2 DVDs or whatever it's calls. Maybe this is the point, I dunno. Any help in how to write this game to DVD-R 4.7
If I need to apart this 6 Gb image, can u tell me how?
I will check out what chip I have, but I aint use any soft to play PS2 burned DVDs. And I've never have any trouble before with 4.7 images. This is my first time.
Thx for the answers.
(Sorry for my English. I'm from Russia) =)

Hey Steimy, My duo cip plays GT4 with just a regular burn of the ios onto DVD-R, could it be said then that MGS2 could be burned straight with alcohol or does it still need toxic DL patch? in that case its a NRG file, so would it need converted to an ISO first?

If it is being put onto dual layer media, you need to patch it for it to work.
The GT4 is dual layer, there is now way that it can be burned as just a strait up copy to a DVD5 4.7GB disc, unless of course you downloaded the game which was already ripped to fit a DVD5
and i am not sure, but i think it would have to be an ISO
I have never used the program, but i suggested it to someone here and they used it on their ISO, then burned to a dual layer disc and it worked with their chip. As long as your chip can play the original GT4 game which is dual leyer, then after patching it and burning to a dual layer disc the game should work.
My DMS4 Pro will play them anyway so i never had a need to use the patching program. The people who made that program make the flash for my chip so that is already part of my chip.

So will I have to burn the nrg to disc with DVD Decrypter then rip it back to my pc to patch it as an iso with TDL? Also what are the best dual layer discs? I mean I'll only need one. I have all TY's, but they are only DVD-R and +R

Edit:

My PS2 can play Original DL DVD with no problem.
I'll try what u've said. Thx.

I used magic iso, made an iso and attempted to patch it with TL, but it said "failed to open". I then made an MDS file for the NRG file with DVD Decrypter which TL was able to patch the mds file.
Then I burned the mds file with dvd decrytper on DL DVDR+ at 2.4 speed and the ps2 would only go to the system configuration/browser screen, not even getting to the Red screen of death. Is this a Coaster or do I need to boot differently with my chip? Why am I getting the failed to open message? any advice as I only have 2 DVD DL discs left

Wish i could help, but having never used it i do not know much about how it patches them or what file types it patches.
Some chips like the DMS4 Pro do have settings in the settings menu for playing DVD DL discs, so you may want to check that out.
If it was not the NRG file, and was an ISO originally i think it would have been easier. BUt there is no telling what is happening during the conversion. Both chips (Duo2 SE & Duo2 GT) say they can play PS2 DVD9. Search the net for your chip and see if you can find an instruction manual to see if you have to set anything special for loading DVD9, but i think it is more in the process due to the NRG file than tehe chip as to why it is not working. Can it patch the NRG file? you may want to make a copy of that file and try it on the copy, then possiply patch and burn with Nero in it's original format.

TDL- Toxic DL Patcher, it is a program that can patch a dual layer game so that any modchip that is able to play Dual Layer (DVD9) original games, will be able to play a dual layer back up game.
It is only for people who have DVD9 (dual layer) eneabled modchips

2 steimy:
Thx for the explonation what's TDL is.
My PS2 can read originally DVD9 discs, so I'll try to patch NRG image this days, cuz when u trying to make ISO image it's comes out only 4.99 in the end of the process.
I think it's cuz PS2 DVDs have some sort of road at the discs (system road or whatever it's calls) and only Nero can copy it. I've meet this problem when I've copyed PC's games. They're have this road too, but only about 1 MB, when PS2 format can hold a couple of GBs information on this road.

So to Shrink this game to DVD5, would I follow the previously written instructions for rebuilding or is there a special method? I ask, because in another thread, the instructions said they were "dated" Are there new instructions for rebuilding and if so what are they?
