Just starting to backup my dvd's.
I was wondering what is better: weather to encode as a DIVX file or use SRINk or RECODE to make fit on one standard 4.5gb DVD disk.

Your feedback and experince much appreaciated.

Recode works well. However, CloneDVD+AnyDVD is awesome!!

Hi,

Dvd shrink and recode are used to backup movies that you already own to fit a standard blank dvd (which is what you want to do provided you are making a copt of your dvds). divx is basically a compressed movie that can be fit onto a cd if you can get it under 700mb and not lose any picture quality and can be stored on external drive in a much smaller format than the original dvd compliant files. In order to watch those divx on a standalone dvd/cd player it would have to divx certified to play them. otherwise you are looking at creating vcds from those divx files to play on your tv. Short summary on the difference and surely someone else will come along and explain it in more technical terms. Post back if you have a particular question.

to burn or not to burn that is the question

Quality-wise I would go with recode (the author of shrink now works for nero) and usually if you do movie only for those larger dvs without the extras, trailers, etc you normally don't have to compress or lose any clarity.
