Are there many set top players that can play DVD+R DL, or am I forced to play them on my computer?

If the discs are bitset to DVD-ROM most any player will play them. I haven't tested any that weren't bitset, but the ones that were played just fine for me.

My Philips DVP642 has played DVD+R DL booktyped to DVD-ROM DL, DVD+R DL not booktyped and DVD-R DL discs ...

I undersyand that almost all DVD players will play DVD-ROM DL discs, certainly all the newer ones will ...

I have a Sanyo that plays DVD-R. Will booktyping allow it to play DVD+R or DVD+R DL?

If your player plays DVD-R's only, then no.
Only +R,+RW, and +R DL discs can be booktyped to DVD Rom. A -R disc can't be changed.

A +R disc that has been booktyped to DVD Rom, on another computer, may play just fine in yours, even it it doesn't normally play +R discs. Commercial dvd movies are booktyped to DVD Roms. That's why they play in almost all players.

My stepfather has a dvd player that won't play homemade dvds, no matter if they are +R or -R. But I booktyped a +R to be a DVD Rom, and it played perfectly.
