its a maxell 16x DVD-R. Ive heard 16x is not good but i couldnt find 8x from any good brand, the best brand i found was maxell with the 16x. is the maxell 16x DVD-R good or should i return it before i use one of the discs,failing and not being able to return the 15 pack i bought. If its good what speed should i write it at?

I think Maxell DVDs are pooh - Try Ritek or Verbatim. You should try and burn your backups at the lowest speed possible - 2x or 4x is safe. Burning at 16x is the best way to make plenty of coasters!

Can anybody else give advice if the Maxell 16x DVD-R are also good to use because these are the only good ones that are made in Japan that they sell at my nearby tech store.

if they are madew in jap they should be ok if they sell a small amount like a pack of 3 buy and test because all ps2 like diff discs

I would not go with 16X, find some 8X. They have online store you can get better media at if you can not find it at local stores. Ask around for the best online stores in your area.
In the US Supermediastore and Mertiline are suppose to be top notch.

I would go with a good 8X DVD-R to start out.
And buy a few different small quantities of discs as noted above to see which one works bets with your burner and Ps2
They all like different media but stick with good media and you have a much better chance of them working.

Maxcell are only good if they are made in Japan, if they are made in Taiwan do not buy them. Same goes for Sony

Verbatim & Taiyo Yuden are two other good choices.
