Hi --

I've got a quick (and hopefully easy) question. If you've got a DivX/XviD file and you want to add subtitles to it (e.g., using VirtualDub filters) -- how do you set the re-encoding such that you do not lose any of the original quality of the XviD/DivX? I suppose the same thing would apply to splicing/appending two XVid/DivX files (like two 700s that are part of a 2CD DivX rip)...

...whenever I try this right now, I always wind up with smaller files and lower quality -- obviously I want to retain the best quality possible while still getting to add in my subtitles and/or splice the two CDs into a single file...

Thanks to everyone (any anyone) for the help ... really appreciate it.

XviD/DivX are lossy codecs. You recompress and you loose quality. The only way to not loose quality would be to use softsubs instead of hard ones. When joining, you should just direct stream the video.
