You said "The computer is aimed to do a bit of everything. "

Do you overclock? What is your budget? How much gaming do you do?

I think 2GB of faster RAM would be better for most applications. The only time I can think of the other being faster would be things like Video Editing, Photoshop, and anything that demands loads of RAM. Remember, if you have 2 identical sticks you can use Dual Channel, but a 2GB and a 1GB stick (is that how you are making it 3GB?) won't be Dual Channel.

Ive got 2 x 512MB pc-3200 400MHz in the computer at the moment, ive got another 2 x 1GB of pc 4200 533MHz. My question is is 2 x 1GB of 4200 better than 3GB of pc 3200 ( speed wise i.e. apps going faster games going faster).

I dont over clock, and i do use a lot of ram demanding applications.

By RAM demanding do you mean needs alot (video editing) or needs really fast stuff (mainly gaming)?

Well, faster RAM is good for games, more RAM is good for video editing. I think 2GB is ample (realistically) for either really. Unless you were making a specific Video Editing machine that is.
