it turns out that my budget is now 1400. do you think i can build a system with a socket 940 processor with decent video capabilities for that price?
how about this card instead of that one. im not sure but that one was the 800 and this is the 1600. is the 1600 any better?

The X1600XT will beat the lower end X800 cards (GTO, GT, Pro) but not necessarily the XL. The 1600 is basically the X800 but with Pixel shader 3 support. If you can stretch the X1800GTO is good, but that might be a tad pricey. The X1600XT is indeed your best bet for the amount of money it is. I wouldn't go socket 940, that's another platform that could see being superceded by AM2, I'm not exactly sure of its future.

AM2 has 940 pins but is a different socket. 940 is reserved for opterons. And cheers.

i have one more question: if the board says ati or nvidia does that mean we can only use that brand video card or does that mean the brand of graphics integrated into them?

It either means the chipset maker or the graphics chip. That doesn't stop you putting either brand GPU in.

Put in layman's termsish, that's an AM2 Processor so you need DDR2 RAM for it, not DDR1 as 939 was happy with.

It's good because it's VERY smilar to my new build.
X2 4200+: Same as me, great CPU. For some reason people will say "go 3800 or 4400, the 4200 sucks!" - but no, really, the 4200 is imo one of the best buys out there.
Mobo is awesome, I'm getting the similar SE version.
a 37GB Raptor will kick ass! Hence why I've bought one
a 250GB Caviar is good. I already have two. would have bought a third but the site I used don't sell them, so I went with a Barracuda.
X1800XT is good, I got the 1900, but it's still a fast card!
Nice case, good sound, one problem: Power supply. Thermaltake 430s actually aren't that good, and you're running close to 430W with that system at peak times, I'd get something like a Seasonic or Enermax of 500W+.
