I have recently got my copy of 3.8 coder. I am trying to load from a 200 GB usb hard drive. I have followed the instructions, but am having no success as of yet. Also, is it possible to load dual layer disc backups off of the external hard drive or do they need the toxic dual layer patch? Can anyone give me some advice? thanks in advance.

I'm not familiar with all the new functions of SM3.8 Coder, but all previous versions of SM couldn't load dual-layer or from HDD, only from DVD5 discs.

Maybe you will need to load an additional CD based app to read from the HDD?

It's the latest version. It's supposed to support HDD and Action Reply Codes. I have followed the directions to load backups off of a western digital 200GB external HD, but i haven't had success yet. If you can load off of a HD, I don't see why you couldn't load DL discs and get around rebuilding to a certain degree. You wouldn't have to worry about your store bought games getting destroyed ever again! No disc scratches!

Anyone out there that can give some input????

according to http://swapmagic3.com/ it does say it supports Action Replay codes but it also just says USB Devices (Thumb & Pen Drives) I don't think it means it supports USB Hard Drives...
you can D/L USB Advanced or any other ELF File program and run it from a Thumb/Pen drive through USB with 3.8 Coder but from what I gather it won't run games off of a Hard Drive itself...

I don't think you can run games off of even a flash drive..the program is made to just boot aps off of a Memory Card or Flash Drive ...
HD Loader, USB Extreme, Emulators etc etc that sort of thing....

you need to download usb extreme make a Memory Card Exploit and then you can run games off of your USB Hard Drive...

sweet! thanks for all your help. I already had SM 3.6 but got the 3.8 coder version so i could finally get the DL disc backups to work without hard mod. i'll look into this. so, can you play the DL game backups with the usb advance, ect..? that is my only hangup.

I heard that the usb's are slower to load though, is that true?

I don't use USB Extreme myself..
I have a FAT older V7 PS2 so I use HD LOADER
for a Hard Drive USB loads slower than a internal drive but not much slower than the disc from what I've read.. only thing is that USB extreme isn't compatible with all games (neither is HD Loader but it supports more games)

as for DVD9 (DL) Support, Can't see why it wouldn't support DL. HDloader & HD Advanced do.. I know USB Extreme is basicly a USB Ver of HD Advanced..

Downloads are free so hey it's worth a shot to test it all out...
if you're trying to get around patching or rebuilding. you may still have to do it with some games... but at least if you rebuild a game on your computer you're not wasting a DVD to use the game...
