Ok i currently have a dell dimension 4400 but im looking for a case, but i have heard that dell motherboards arent really default size motherboards, so i was wondering if this true and what case can i use with this motherboard. i will be eventually buying a new motherboard but i dont want to buy all new componets right now ie: ( ram, processor, videocard and such.) so if anything i am willing to switch the motherboard if i can use all of my current equiptment. ( PLEASE HELP! LOL)

get the medium height tower as it fits both regular size atx & micro atx boards. make certain the psu motherboard connector fits the motherboard as there is 20 & 24 pin connectors.

Try tigerdirect. I'm not trying to advertise, but they have tons of stuff at really reasonable prices. To see what you can maxout your 478 to go to powerleap.com, run the upgrade configurator and it will give you a good idea what you can do. I went through the hassle of buying a 478 processor on the advise of a "tech," didn't work. I ran the upgrader, took the readout and decided what I wanted to do. Bought memory, hd, dvd rom, dvd rw, processor, powersupply, and a lot of fans, altogether about 4 to 5 hundred. I priced a new Dell with the upgrades I mentioned and it exceded 2200.00. Caution upgrades to 478 are getting expensive. Especially processors. 200 plus for a 2.8 pent 4. But it really cooks. You may be able to buy the mother board and processer combo and save a bit, and have more upgrade ability. Be sure to get the fastest front side bus, and most upgradeable memory slots you can afford. You can have a fast processor, but without the ability to transfer at a high rate, and a lot of memory, and a fairly fast HD. It is only a fast processor. They make the computer.

Well... The board looks good, upgradeable, sata support, 4gb mem, I'm not sure if the agp 4x is backwards compatable with the agp 8x, but only 478 socket. Expensive. Board by the same manufacurer "different name," at td see link one. Is half the price. A little less memory but has agp 4x. See link two for the list of 775 pinn mb's, with processor of your choice. Mb and processor are about the same as the price of the mb you refered to earlier. See link three, these are the nearest specs for your Dell Dimension 4400 i could come up with. I don't have your service tag or express service code. You can go to Dell.com click support. Enter the codes, and get setup when new, and what you can upgrade the Dell mb to. The 478 socket is obsolete now. I'm not going to tell you what to do, but look at the current hardware you have now, and compare it to a 775 with processor. You may be able to transfer memory, vid card, sound card, of course hd, and cd/dvd drives. And if you are thinking of speed, most of the 775 mb's are 800mhz. I'm not going to say everything will connect and work like a charm, expect a kink or two. But you will learn a lot and know that you built your computer to your specs.

There is plenty of support and info on this site. You get better service here than you would get from any of the mega producers.

Big can of worms ya opened there. Speed=$$$. How fast do you want to go? I know you posted that you will use it mostly for video editing, and photoshop. And, I'll assume burning dvds too. This is what I did to my dell demented, uh Dimension. 1.8ghz celeron 478 to 2.8ghz pent 4. "NOTE," if you do pull the processor from your Dell MB, be very careful. I don't know if they used an adhesive type of heat sink medium. But it was as hard as JB Weld, it litterally pulled the metal face plate off of my 1.8 chip. The chip is still functional, but I really doudt if it has the same thermal properties without it. Added liteon dvd rom and dvd r/rw. Added Western Digital 80gb hd "7200rpm, 8mb cache," to my other WD 30 gb hd. Could only upgrade memory to 1gig. Diamond 9250 pci vid card 256mb memory, I was limited to pci. 200 watt to 400 watt power supply. New cpu fan and sink. Additional fans for hd's and vid card. Total without the processor was around 350.00 us. I imagine you would probably use the same processor as I did, 200+. It seems the price goes up as the supply goes down. I only have a 400mhz front side bus, but with the diamond vid card I ran 3 different benchmark programs, and it did better than most. Added AnyDVD and Clone2, the burner came with Nero. It can rip and burn a dvd in around 45 min. Has been as fast as 30 min but I learned the value of slowing down the burn speed. I am like you I use it for burning, photos and internet. All this is with the original Dell MB. But if you see gaming in your future you will spend a lot more. Before you make any major decisions look at your hardware. Think about what you want to be able to do with it 3 to 5 years from now. Look at lets say, Dells site, "right now it seems to be the cheapest," design your own computer to what you think you need. Look at the price. Then sleep on it. And remember you want to edit video and maybe burn. Do you need a 3 gig processor, 4 gigs of memory, 200 to 300 gig hd, 512 or 1 gig video card? Sorry to be so long winded, I don't want to influence you to make a decision you will regret.

well honestly i probably burn about 2-3 movies a month and barely ever use photoshop unless i have to do something for my website so its mainly for web browsing and a little video editing here and there but not alot where i need to demand speed i mean im not looking too spend 5-700 ill upgrade slowly get a motherboard and chip and atx case and power supply then get everything else slowly so what should i start with and what can i keep from the computer i currently have?

edit: also let me add that most of the stuff im talking about using are pci slots and i already have the harddrives and dvd burners and cd roms also are there any motherboards that will allow me to have 3 harddrives

First select the case that will allow all of the drive bays and pci ports you will need. There are case, mb, processor, and powersupply combinations. Don't go cheap on the motherboard, make sure it has a good bios. It will help avoid problems. I would look closely at 775 socket, your memory should transfer, be sure to check the specs closely. The boards I looked at had sata support. So add all the hd's you please. You could even add a card to run raid at various levels if file protection is necessary. Most expansion cards are fairly inexpensive. Video capture is getting cheaper. When ready transfer all of your drives, cards, and what ever other goodies you plan to put in. Then when 775 processors drop in price in a year or so, upgrade. Add memory, larger hd, and you will be able to avoid the all at once sticker shock when the 478 socket is todays 486. Avoid new os's, xp is not perfect, linux isn't either. But installing a new os on a newly built, configured, computer can be a nightmare. The better the motherboard, bios, processor combination, the more likely the transfer will be smooth. Good luck. CD
