hi all,
i am looking at buying a new pc tower as mine has given up completely!!

i currently have p4 2gig cpu, 512 ddr3200 ram, geforce4 mx440 64mb graphics, jetway p4xc4 motherboard.

i have found a ready built tower with an AMD 64bit 3100+ sempron cpu, 1gb ddr pc3200 ram 400mhz, 256 bit unichrome pro 3d graphics card and ecs usa k8m800 motherboard.

i realise some things are much better ie graphics and ram but are the cpu's similar or do they work better for different applications etc?

my system was built around 3 -4 years ago and just wanted to know how much better overall (if at all) the new system would be.

thanks

Those Sempron/64 3100+ Processors are not bad at all.If you can get it at a reasonable price grab it.You will be surprised by the difference in performance compared to your old P-4.

I checked out the board,it's nothing special but with it you can always upgrade to a better/faster processor, video card and go up to 2 gigs of ram.

That motherboard (s754)will accept up to an Athlon/64 3700+ so it has some potential.

Main System- Amd/64 3800x2 currently@ 2.5ghz. Asus A8N-E,win.xp-pro.4x1gb.Ocz platnium ddr 400,Maxtor 40gb.& 250gb.ide & 2x W.D.250 sata,Benq 1650V dvd Reader & Benq DW-1655 Writer,EVGA Geforce 7600gs,Creative Audigy-LS,Antec 750w psu. Vizio 37"hdtv monitor 1360x768@75hz.

I think you will be happy but you must realize if that is a s754 board (which it appears to be) the upgrades will be limited to what I mentioned previously as that platform will soon be obsolete.

Sempron any day. To be honest any platform that hosts the sempron isn't going to stick around forever, but if you really want to get a lasting system, go for one in June (if you can wait that long) and get a Manila core one on the AM2 platform. Of course a lot of people buy new PCs every time, so you may not want upgrade ability but if you do, AM2 is the way to go to do it.
