Hello all,

I've been having some trouble with nero express recently (version 6.6). It's been faithful to me for over a year now but as of a week ago will not burn dvds for me. Before the burning process even begins the program hangs up, freezes, and I have to kill it to get out of it (after which it still politely returns me to the nero smart start menu.)

Now here's what I think may be going on.

A week ago - in fact, the same day this problem occurred - my comp got infected by a trojan that did some nasty business, and of which it is still suffering. Since the failure of nero coincides with this infiltration, I'm wondering if perhaps a program in my System32 folder got corrupted and is causing this problem. Is this a veritable hypothesis?
It's the only thing I can think of at the moment that could cause such a problem as the program has remained loyal and constant to me for quite some time and as of a week before the trojan was buring dvd data discs and movies flawlessy. This is the only significant alteration to my system I could think of that would have any impact.

I would appreciate anything resembling an unceremonious stab in the dark as to helping me solve this problem, as I have been wandering the web aimlessly for the past three days trying (fruitlessly) to find solutions.

Have you checked to see if your history file covers attempted burns before and after the time you mention. Maybe you could pick up a difference in your setup or drivers or whatever.

You could also check the Windows event viewer in case any problems are showing up there.

thanks for the reply!
I checked the Nero history file already, but unfortunately it hasn't recorded my attempted burns since the infection, probably because the application scarcely does anything before it freezes. So I can't weed out anything there.
As for the windows event viewer, what would I be looking for, exactly?

Event Viewer in WinXP. If you don't know where it is, Admin tools. Look at Application or System entries that might have a yellow or red marker. Right click and check the properties. This may give you some indication of a problem.

This is last log in the NeroHistory file. It details the last succesful burn before infection (audio CD). I haven't tested recently to see if nero will still burn CDs as the DVD burning problem is of more paramount concern to me.

- And in regards to the event viewer, Saltgrass, I'll take a look and get back to you.

Gwendolin, the updates, unfortunately, didn't do anything. However, it never hurts to be up to date and I thank you providing the links. Much appreciated.

Saltgrass, I'm looking at my event viewer now (sorry it took so long), under my applications something called "MsiInstaller" periodically shows up under a yellow flag at about the time I was hit. I've checked it's properties but I don't know what to make of it.
Under System it seems my system restore has been running into problems backing up (under each occasion a different .dll has caused the problem - not sure if this is relevant). Other than that, nothing under System shows up around the time I was hit.

I don't know if that is helpful information or not, but I am seriously befuddled as to what may be causing this malfunction.

I forgot to ask, how did you clean your system? Sometimes more files are removed than should be leaving you with problems.

If you look at the problem entries and properties, you are given a chance to go to the Microsoft site and see if they have any information. If it says it has nothing else, let us know what it is saying about the problem. The MSIInstaller thing might mean something is or was trying to install something-good or bad, who knows.

Which .dlls are you having problems with? If you do web searches for them sometimes you can find out if they are causing problems. If you know which ones they are, you can replace them. One might be part of the virus, some of them tend to change names so they aren't caught. Please post those also.

I would first make sure the trojan is gone (what is it's name) and then reinstall Nero. You may want to go to another type forum to get rid of the trojan.

The removal of the trojan was a bit of a convoluted process. I had to install prevx1 just to get my system to recognize the malware infiltration, then use a combination of norton anti-virus, Ad-Aware + Spybot to eliminate any possible remants (until I had installed prevx, these programs would not be able to scan). I'm pretty sure the trojan itself is gone (it was called taskdir.dll, btw) but I know the damage is lingering. One such error I frequently get says something about E6F1873B.dll, which, on preliminary internet queries, has indicated may also be a remnant trojan as well. However, before I go to mess with my system I decided it would be best to back up some vital files, hence why I came here. I figured if I could isolate what may interfering with Nero (if it was indeed compromised by the trojan) I could backup my data before I attempted any risky repairs. Unfortunately, aside from that I don't know exactly where to begin with the repair process as I have no way of determining exactly what files may have been corrupted. I figured as far as Nero was concerned, someone around here may know something.
Anyways, the dlls listed in the event viewer are:

Well, the .new extension means something has added that extension. Have you checked to see if you have that dll without the .new extension?

Anyway, the trojan you mention is part of a Rootkit senario--I don't like rootkits, they scare me.
