Hello folkes
Well, this is a cry for help.
We recently baught a DVD burner and set about making copies of all sorts, backing up data off the hard drive and copying some old movies that the kids liked to watch so we didn't have to worry about them getting scratched and the like.
We used Nero for all of this as it came free with the DVD burner, and got on quite well with it.
Then we started downloading a few films from the internet, some old classics like Dumbo and a few for the kids. Some of them copied from the Hard drive without a problem, then we struck a hitch. We copied it, put it into the player and nothing, either no sound or no picture or the most common one, disc error. A friend of mine suggested our DVD player wouldn't play AVI formats (whatever this means) and sent us a convert software that he had that should fix the problem, since then it's got gradually worse, things don't copy from the HD onto DVD in a playable format at all any more. We've got loads of bits and pieces that our youngest was really lookign forward to (post man pat, thomas the tank engine and the like) and there's no luck with it. Now, I know just enough about what I need to do to get the thing to work normally, as soon as friends start talking about avi or divx files I get glassy eyed and just nod polietly.
Can anyone help a more than slightly confused dad whose gettign further out of favour with his two year old?!?!

HELP. I know nothing... I'm from Barcelona!!

I would guess that when you did as your friend suggested, you may have changed a codec Nero uses. It might take a reinstall after using the Clean tool to remove first. But don't do it yet.

Is your set top DVD player new or a few years old?

What procedures (which Nero utility) and with what file types are you using to burn the DVD?

Nero 7 v7.10.1.0
P4 2.4GHz 1 Gig RAM
NEC ND3550A DVD Burner

Most dl files are AVI, mpeg, WMV or DivX. All need to be converted, which can be done using Nero Vision Express. Here is a guide that explains how to do this.

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/272946

Once the file is converted and if it is the right size for your DVD5 disk which is a size of 4.3g, you can then just burn the file using Nero. If you need to compress it then you must use Nero Recode and this will compress it to fit your media and then burn.

If you have converted the file into DVD Compliant files you should have these three files present to burn to a playable disk.

VTS.IFO
VTS.BUP
VTS.VOB

When you convert it is best to have an already named folder for your output so it is all in one place and easily opened.

I've been using convertex which writes then into a 'handling folder' but does this explain why, after converting and the writing to DVD, it still comes up with "disc error" when I put it into the machine?

I am not familiar with this sw so am not sure just what format you are converting to. Try NVE for conversion and burning and see how it works out, and then if you are still getting disk error, you may want to check out and make sure you are using good media and that it is the correct format for your burner and player, writing at reasonable speed, that your burner firmware is up to date.

A disc error message is what you might get if you are using a DVD +R disc in an older set top DVD player. To eliminate this possibility, check the disc and see if the Book Type is set to DVD +R or DVD-ROM.

You could always try posting a Nero log file, they can be found here

Nero 6 history log location: Program Files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt

Nero 7 history log location: Program Files>Nero>Nero 7>Core>NeroHistory.txt
They start something like this

Windows XP 5.1
IA32
WinAspi: File 'Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=4.60 (1021), size=45056 bytes, created 1999-09-10 12:06:00
ahead WinASPI: File 'C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.1.74, size=164112 bytes, created 2004-11-02 12:54:32
