Hi, and thank you in advance for your help. Yesterday, I was happily burning dvds right and left....so much so that I ran out of dvds. So I went out today and bought a new spindle of the exact same dvd's that I've been using for over 50 burning session. Today, I am suddenly getting the below error message. I thought initially that one of the brand new dvds was flawed, so I tried another, and another, and another...25 discs later, and I'm still getting the same error. I can burn to a fuji RW disc just fine though.

HELP!

Welcome to aD!
1st let's edit out that serial # - begins w/ 5C.

Nero Version: 7.0.1.2
In Nero StartSmart click Nero Toolkit > Nero ProductSetup. Then check 'Update Your Nero products' and follow the instructions.

There is a firmware update (BYS3) for your drive that's 2 months newer than the one your have. May or may not help. No support on this drive since the latter part of 2004.
Here's a link:

Good media - 16x - but that may be part of your problem. Your drive can't fully recognize it and is using a generic write pattern. Could be causing your failures. This is where the fimrware comes into play - it 'teaches' your drive read/write strategies of new media.
Try and get some 8x or lower discs - look for Verbatim, or the made in Japan Sony, Fuji or Maxell.
Keep us posted - good, bad or otherwise!!

binkie7, thanks for your quick response!

I tried to do the update through nerostartsmart, and encountered this error: "MSI starter has encountered a problem and needs to close" I cannot update :(

Secondly, I did download the firmware update, but I do not understand how to update; this is the readme.

Original RPC-2 Firmware version BYS3 for the SONY DVD RW DW-D22A

Flash in Windows using "LtnFW"

If the drive is not detected after a misflash, then flash in DOS with mtkflash (1.69 or higher)
Use this command: "mtkflash # w /b BYS3.bin"
Where # is replaced by one of the following numbers:
1 - Primary Master
2 - Primary Slave
3 - Secondary Master
4 - Secondary Slave

If using mtkflash 1.80.1, then do not include the "/b" flag. Use this command: "mtkflash # w BYS3.bin"

Downloaded from dhc014.rpc1.org

I don't know what to do with this?

Lastly....the media. I "thought" I was buying the exact same media as I had been using a day earlier, but perhaps the speeds are different. Nonetheless, the label says 1-16X. So I should be able to burn at less than 16X. However....I don't recall being given the option anywhere in the burn process to select a speed. I should be, no?

Don't forget to edit your post and remove the serial #!!
Now the Nero update - you can try this link from nero:
http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/nero7-up.php

The firmware - here's is a guide and link to download the utility needed:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=83294\
Your Sony is actually made by LiteOn. Here's another thread on your drive if you feel adventurous - just be cautious:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/312424

Yes even if you are using 16x speed media you should be able burn at a lower speed. My guess is you had 8x media before these. 8x media instore is getting harder and harder to find. The firmware may help your drive with these.
The burn speed options will be listed on the last screen in Nero. Since your drive burns -R's at 8x max - also try slowing down to 4x.
