Got the computer at the beginning of april, installed my own harddrive, a 120 gig I'd had for a year or two, alongside the 200 gigabyte that came with it.

Few weeks later, I get this issue: The computer will lock up abruptly, and I usually have music playing so it's very obvious as the music stops, but it also happens to any programs I use. The hiccup lasts for maybe 5 seconds, and then I hear a click coming from the harddrive bay, and it goes back to normal. So far, no data corruption has happened but I have had programs crash just once.

I do a chkdsk, nothing serious, but I assume it to be the harddrive I installed myself. Two or so weeks pass with these burps, and slowly they become more frequent and for longer periods, at its peak it was about once an hour for 7-8 seconds, and then the loud click (only one, not multiple clicks) So, I remove the drive I put in, and let the computer run for a day without it in.

No problems. With this I was sure it was the drive I put in, and went and got a 300 gigabyte replacement. (the 200 gig that came with the computer has the OS, if that helps) I've been running with the new drive installed for about 4 days now, and just yesterday did the computer start doing the hiccups again. It happens maybe 4 times a day, for 3-4 seconds, and not nearly as loud as it used to be, but I'm still really worried.

My limited research tells me: this could be heat related, even though I get average internal heat tests and no physical abnormality by touch, and that hard drive clicking is a sign of a failing drive.. but odd things going on.

Just a wild, uneducated guess, but could it have something to do with my system rejecting two hard drives? I had two in at the same time for, what, a month? with no problems. I just don't even know what foot to put forward first.

I jumped into the tech support chat for my system as I didn't put it together myself, and after an hour of going over the absolute basics, she told me I'd get "email updates at some point in the coming days" and we parted with that. It has been two days, and I'm not really liking the situation.

System is athlon 2.4Ghz, 1 gig ram, onboard ATI express 200 card (waiting on my 6800 to be delivered, heh).

It's just so weird. Anyway, if this doesn't belong here, I apologize, I'm sort of running out of options. If you know of anywhere else you can think of for me to bring up this issue, please suggest it, as I've run out of static media to research this problem and forums seem to be my last resort.

Thanks for anything you can contribute.

Hi,I have heard that clicking sound myself and it does indicate emminent hard drive failure,if left unchecked the bsod's will probably follow. There is a nice little program you can download called Everest Home Edition,it is free and will tell you a lot of usefull info about your system such as drive temps, voltages etc..
You can get it here>http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
After you download it click on the computer icon then sensor,if your system chip supports it you should see all your internal components temperatures and voltages.
Try this and post those results back here, maybe we can get an idea of whats going on.

Main System- Amd/64 3800x2 currently@ 2.5ghz. Asus A8N-E,win.xp-pro.4x1gb.Ocz platnium ddr 400,Maxtor 40gb.& 250gb.ide & 2x W.D.250 sata,Benq 1650V dvd Reader & Benq DW-1655 Writer,EVGA Geforce 7600gs,Creative Audigy-LS,Antec 750w psu. Vizio 37"hdtv monitor 1360x768@75hz.

I can only get sensor readings on my two harddrives.

Temperatures:
Seagate ST3200021A 38 °C (100 °F)
WDC WD3000JB-00KFA0 26 °C (79 °F)

The seagate is the 200 (that came with the system), the western digital is the 300 I installed a few days ago.

That temp certainly looks cool enough, what I was hoping to see were the voltages. Was the last bad drive a WD also?

Well, let's not call it bad, as the problem persists so it makes me think it wasn't the 120, but it was a Hitachi.

Hitachi's have been highly regarded lately, this comes as a bit of a surprise, though this is the first failure I've heard of on this forum by them.
My advise to you would be to return that Western Digital asap if it keeps making noise...they usually just get worse.
It is strange that two different drives by two different mfg's would display the same symptoms within such a short time.
Maybe one of our resident experts will chime in with some ideas but I'm still thinking these newer drives may not like your power supply...they are not as forgiving as the older models.
Just a possability though.
I'm sorry I misread your original post,I thought the Hitachi was new.Perhaps it's time was due!

Yeah, I highly doubt it's the drives themselves, atleast not the 300 or 120 gig drives, but I know little. Thanks for your input, boxwrench.

One last experiment you could try...remove the secondary drive and see if the problem continues (if you havn't tried thet already)If it does perhaps the original drive is the culprit!

Best of luck to you.

Indeed, as stated I tried that for a day (was at the computer maybe 9 hours that day?) no problems.

are bothdrives on the same cable? if so than put the wd on the secondary as master to see if still does it or not as possible the seagate or wd don't like each other. also what is the current jumper configuration of the 2 hds as in master, slave or cable select?

They're on the same cord, the seagate is master, the WD is slave. When the old drive was in and I had the problem even worse, the seagate was master then, too, and the hitachi 120 gig was slave.

Gotten quite a few replies to my CDF thread, could help anyone reading this to stay up to date on the situation.
