I was trying to install adobe premiere elements 2.0 and found out that I need a cpu that has SSE2. I never even heard of that before and learned that my current CPU doesnt support it. Right now I have an Athlon xp 2600. Which CPU would you guys recommend for me?

I just want to be able run premiere. Should I get a athlon 64? How can I tell if my motherboard will support it? I know that I have an older motherboard (I bought my comp in 2003)that doesn't support pci express graphics cards. Can anyone recommend a cpu based on the fact that my motherboard has a 2600?

One more thing. I have never changed my cpu before. Can anyone direct me to a detailed guide (preferably with pictures). Thanks everyone for your help.

Download Everest Home Edition, after downloading and installing it click on the motherboard tab,it should tell you what board you have and what cpu socket is on it.We can take it from there.

The board itself is limited to a maximum Athlon XP3200+ All the XP chips only support SSE not SSE2 which you need.

Unfotunately your gonna have to upgrade you Motherboard aswell as your CPU to get the SSE2 functionality and maybe some other parts too!!

I guess you need to work out your budget first and then take it from there.

DMW is correct,at bare minimum you will need to upgrade the cpu and board. If your in the U.S. I can provide you with some links and recommendations. You can get a descent m/b, processor and memory under $325.00 but you may want to upgrade your power supply also.

Let us know your budget and we can help.

Thanks guys. I upgraded my power supply last year so I don't think it will be a problem. I do live in the US so any links that you can provide would be helpful. If I can do this for under $325 that would be great. Thanks again.

http://www.newegg.com

Sweet site, great deals. You'd do yourself a favor by starting your upgrade with a motherboard that has a ton of CPU support options such as:

AMD support - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813130037
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131540

Intel support -
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131578

CPUs:
hehehe....I'd love to post some good ones, but for AMD the list is too long to get into...but you can start yourself off with a budget minded 3800+ (64bit), mid range 4400+, top 4800+ (or FX-57)...or go dual core budget X2 3800+, thru the top end of X2 4800+, or go gung-ho with the X2 FX60.

For Intel CPUs...IMHO, I think your better off with Dualcore...(but not necessarily those that have HyperThreading).
