Nope.

Maxell is trash.

Use Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden.

As for software for backin up the game, the simplest option is a program called DVD Decryptor - it's free, works great and you can find a link to download right here on afterdawn, just use search feature and you'll find it (failing that, just google 'DVD Decryptor')

Simply choose mode>iso>read to rip an image of the game to your HD, then choose mode/iso/write, select the image you just made and away you go.

It's too easy really :)

Oh, and make sure you have a mod chip installed or you're using swap magic, that probably seems obvious but there's been quite a few people here who didn't realise that a stock PS2 will not play copied games.

Edit: It is usually advisable to burn at the lowest possible speed.

You don't want to use crappy discs as it will wear out your PS2 laser a lot quicker, anyone and everyone will tell you to use good quality discs; it also means fewer coasters (discs that didn't burn properly) because when you use low-quality discs you also run the risk of the disc not working at all, which means reburning and using up another blank disc.

As for burning at half speed, or any speed, there is some debate. A lot of people will tell you to burn at half speed and others will tell you to burn at 1x.

I just buy Verbatim 1x-4x cause they are cheaper than higher speed discs and I always burn at 1x.

He's right kinda of... Maxell made in Japan (media code using DVD Decrypter MXLRGOx) are the only Maxells to use.

No worries.

Not sure where the best place is for you to buy em, I'm in Australia so I wouldn't know the best place for a UK shopper.

Maxells are fine and aren't "CRAP" as long as they are Made in japan Maxells..

Burn at 4x

16x media seems to have problems with the PS2 and Backups.. Alot of threads lately people have been having problems booting 16x media even Verbatim and Ty's have had problems with thier 16x media and the PS2 .. So to be safe stick with 8x media...

basic rules to follow.
1. 8X DVD-R are your best bet to start out with
2. Burn an 8X DVD at 4X
3. Taiyo Yuden (watch for fakes!), & Verbatim are about the top two used DVD for most people who back up games
4. Sony & Maxcell are good if made in Japan, never buy them if they are made in Taiwan.
5. you need a modified PS2 to be able to play back up discs. A good mod chip is the best solution but also the most expensive one. Swap Magic and an aftermarket flip top will work but not have nearly the ease of use or features as a modchip.
6. most used software for back ups is DVD Decrypter, and in my opinion is also the best and easiest to use.
