I've been burning for about 4 years now, have hundereds of dvd's, used every media from cheap princo to quality verbataim, never a problem. I have used DVD Shrink (DVD Decrypter in some cases to crack certain discs) and nero to burn. Now I got these crappy discs a while back because they were on sale so I can't return them. I get "illegal disc" errors in nero, I've updated my firmware, I have configured to use DMA id available although it keeps saying its off in the failed burn log, and I am not burning too close the the edge. Same error.

Someone suggested that I update nero because I have an older version (6,3,1,6). When I try to install the downloaded program I get a message saying that it can't write inthe temp folder, and asks me to make sure that I have permission the write in that folder?

So I tried to use DVD Shrink to create a ISO and use DVD Decrypter or Imgburn, but I get this error when I try to burn the ISO

"Interpretation- cannot write media-incompatable format"
(error appears in DVD Decrypter and IMGburn)

log:

You could try this. Keep your serial number. Uninstall your version of Nero, run this clean tool,http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/en/Clean_Tools.html

and then try an update from this link

http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe
you could also try for pagkage 2
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

No giving you a guarantee, but it should work for you...however package 2 may not, Cheers.

Just noticed title of your thread...Nero6 cannot be upgraded to Nero7 without buying it, you can however have a trial for 30 days but beware there are a lot of buggy versions available, I would stick to 6 for now.

Do you know if the discs were pre-formatted?

Are you using InCD?

Have you done a disc check of the media?

Did you try to install as administrator? Did you use the clean tool prior to trying to install?

This would lead me to believe that your firmware is not current...but according to rpc1 your are up to date.

Which brings us to your choice of media....

While some people have success using Memorex discs, others are just as well to stay away from them. VideoHelp.com has two reviews of these discs using your drive and the 16X memorex you are using...both are terrible. Perhaps your burner just doesn't like your media. Here is the article...one on the bottom of the first page and the other on the top of the second page:

jsbeckton ,
The problem is w/ the burner recog the newer blank media . You are using a 4X max burner on 16X blank media. That burner is over 3 years old and NEC is not going to upgrade the firmware for it so it could read the newer blank media correctly.

You have 2 choices and they are to try and find good quality older blank media 4 to 8X that the burner can read the Mid code on or buy a new burner. I have the NEC Burner out in the shop and luckily I still have a small supply of 4X Verbatim's that I can use if I need to w/ that burner

only 4x verbataim? 16x verbataim work fine, I have used a bunch of other media w/o problems, are you sure that there is no way for it to read these discs?

And will a new burner really cut down on the overall time not just the burn time? I don't think its worth it to but another burner now especially with fast advancements in dual layer burners, am I right?

jsbeckton,
Each burner has the blank media manuf submit a disk for evaluation and for them to write the firmware that tells the burner who makes the disk and what write strategy to use. My old 1300 NEC will read 4-8X Fuji( MIJ) but it will not read the 16X Fuji's. The only way a burner can recog. the blank media is through the firmware and if it is not updated then you get errors. Just took out a 16X Verbatim to the old burner and the old burner recog it but it does not recog 8X Taiyo Yuden. It will be hit a miss.

The prices of D/L burners are just down right cheap $ 40.00-60.00 US so it would be up to you if you want to spend the money for a new one. If you are ripping from the burner you can get some burners that are not locked at a slow ripping speed

Ok, I gave up with the NEC 1300A and went out and got a GSA-4166B burner. The discs work fine with this. It burns at 22,500 kbs but still only rips at 2000-3000 kbs (which is the majority of the overall process) as before with the old burner. Is there a way to speed the ripping time? And does anyone know where you can get DL discs at a good price?

Check the site below to see if there is a hack to unlock the burner
http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php

If you are in The US look at the Adds in Sunday's paper for BestBuy. They sell the D/L Verbatim's for $19.95 -10

I didn't see my burner there. What do you mean by unlocking? What kinds of speeds does that produce and can it harm my drive or lead to lower quality burns?

jsbeckton ,
It would just unlock the 2X rip speed that most burners are limited to.
EDIT; I forgot that you get a new burner and it is not listed. I stand corrected

I'll let you ask GSA why they lock the ripping speed of the burners
