i have a dell dimension 4700 with a recently updated bios of a10. I bought an ATI X1600 PCIE graphics card from newegg.com. on my dell i have the onboard intel 910gl graphics card. in the bios it says the video is set to auto so if and add-in is put in it would recognize it, the only other option is for it to use the onboard only.
when i install graphics card and plug my dell flat panel into it i get absolutly no picture, after a second i get a beep. i turned off the computer and pluged my flat panel into my onboard, i got a picture, but windows didn't load, a screen came up saying i needed to plug the flatpanal into my graphics card then it gave me the exact same beep.
Please Help

I'll try to answer, but I haven't installed a pcie card. I did just put a ati 9250 pci in my dell. Don't install the new card driver, or,uninstall it if you have. While still connected to the on board video, go to start>control panel>system>hardware>device mgr. Select the on board video driver, right click, disable. It will prompt to restart, do so. On startup f2, configure it to auto, save, turn the computer back off. Connect the monitor cable to the new card. Start the computer, it should windows default. When prompted by add new hardware to select driver, according to ati, unselect all sources of drivers. Click finish. It will say a better driver can't be found. Then put the driver in the tray and install the ati driver. You have to have xp sp2, and microsoft .net framework, to function properly. Let me know if it works. Had to install mine twice to get it right.

alright, in the device manager under display adapters, that is where my onboard graphics are, there are two of them exact same name, so i disabled both, uninstalled ati drivers restarted, already knowing my bios is seto to auto, i turn off my computer. now i install my graphics card and turn on my computer, viola a picture comes to my flatpanal (hurray) before windows loads it comes up with a screen windows loading halted system configuration error. basically what it said was hey, dumbass, turn off the computer and plug in your moniter to the add in graphics card. i turn off my computer and plug into the video card nothing but black on the screen followed by a beep beep from the computer, not the speakers.
Any thoughts?

It's best to completely uninstall the ati drivers in add remove progs. Then when the card is recognized by windows it should windows default to what i described earlier. Getting closer. I would pull the card. Reset bios to onboard. Uninstall all ati drivers "add/remove. Even delete the program folder, should be a diamond folder under c:, and an ati folder in c:\program files. Clean restart, disable on board, shutdown, do the bios thing, shutdown, put in the card. Let windows do its thing, then install the driver. Maybe it will work.

besides just uninstalling the video drivers, try using a utility called Drivercleaner to remove all traces of the old stuff. http://www.drivercleaner.net/ , but try your card in someone else's computer first, because it just might be a bad card as you said. Also, check your card to see if it has an additional plug for power. I don't think the 1600 series does, but my 1900 series card requires a molex plug directly to the videocard or it won't work.

I tried it in 2 different computers all with no luck. It has no plug for external power, so thats not it. anyways on may the 19th i sent it back to newegg. before i sent it out i noticed that a small piece of the gold plating where it makes the connection to the motherboard was missing. i dont know if this was the problem or not but newegg didnt give me any problems and refunded my money.
thanks anyway

Edit: i always leave something out...
