Burning speed is very important. It is a blend of burner quality + disc quality. The better blend, the higher burning speed available without defects.

I think you will find that most here recommend burning DVD at around 4X and CDs around 24X to 32X max, using good quality discs.

If your burner is cheap or not able to write at 16x what good would a 16x disc be? The higher burning speeds usually give the greater chance for errors. There are always exceptions like a good burner (Plextor, BenQ) plus good blank media (Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim) can still produce perfect discs at high speed. Everything depends on your burner and what media you decide to put in it.

The better burners with better media can do well at 8x and higher. Some drives give better quality scans when burned at 8x or higher. Always best to keep the firmware up to date also.
Now comes in the dvd player - what will it accept?
With my 16x speed drives I burn at 8x or higher w/ Taiyo Yuden or Verbs.
Will play in all my different players but is hit or miss on the older ps2. Taking it down to 4x and not a problem on the ps2.
So it's finding what works best for your set up.
What's the make and model of your drive and what media are you using?

If that's the correct model # -the one you have is one of the newer ones on the market.
To burn at a higher speed see if you meet the recommended pc requirements - not the minimum:
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
CPU Speed: 800MHz (2.8GHz or Higher Recommended)
CPU Type: Pentium III (Pentium IV Recommended)
Disk Space: 10GB
Display: Direct X 9.0 Or Higher, Video Card Memory 128MB Or Higher
Memory (RAM): 256MB (512MB Recommended)
Operating System Compatibility: Win2000/XP

While burning to help try & reduce any issues - no multitasking. Keep the firmware up to date too.
Verbs are good I would test them at the rated burn or lower and see how the playback is in the players. The TDK's I would reduce to half the rated burn if not a lower.
Again though see where you pc specs fall into the recommended specs for the drive.
Happy Burning!
