I am having trouble burning double layer disks. They keep failing. I have a sony dvd writer dru 710a with the latest firmware. The writer is a + - writer and can handle DL +R disks. I am using Memorex double layer disks. I have tried Nero, Clone DVD, ImgBurn, DVD Decrypter. I can burn a single layer disk with no problem using any of the above programs. Any ideas on what to try? These disks are expensive also. I have use DMA if available set. Running win xp pro sp 2.
Thanks,
Mike

@mikesteve
What's the burn error you receive?
The discs you are using can be made by either Ritek or Philips and might be the cause of your problem. They can be expensive coasters!
Don't know what speed you're burning at but keep it no higher than 2.4x.
Try some Verbatim - better quality. If you are in the US- Best Buy is having a sale on them.

I try Best Buy tomorrow. I am burning at 2.4x. In Nero all I get is burn failed. I took the disk and then tried to just copy mp3 songs to the disk. Same problem. It works fine with single layer disks. I'll try verbatim.

Thanks,
Mike

Hopefully the Verbatim's will do the trick for you. If not post your log and we'll go from there.

update firmware on your dvd burner. also check your buffer under-run, always rezero or refresh the drive for each burn, make sure dvd disc is clean as a whistle, next for the future ,do not buy sony, check out Lite-On dvd burner.

LOL Mort81, i knew u would jump in~ :)

anyways, @mikesteve, i have your same drive, the sony dru-710a (as well as an OEM Liteon SOHW-1633S) LOL...

my first thing to suggest, would be FIRMWARE...what version are you using? i have Sony's official BYX5 on mine and i have in the past burned at least 100 Ridata Ritek DVD+R DLs using it with no problems...

as binkie7 suggested, it would be helpful if you could give us the MID coding on your particular Memorex DL discs, i've had good success with both the RitekD01 MID coding as well as the RicohJPND00 (there were 2 MID codings for the Ridata Ritek DVD+R DLs) on this Sony dru-710a; i HAVE tried the PHILIPS.CD2 and was NOT pleased with it, but that's just me~ :)

i have also PERSONALLY found that the rebadged "Ritek DL media" (ie. Memorex, Fujifilm, Dynex, etc. found here in the U.S.) were not as good as the Ridata Riteks (Ritek's own "house" brand is Ridata)...that's just personal experience as i've used diff. "branded" DLs that have the RitekD01 coding...

given the info u provided, dma is on, winxp pro sp2, u SAY u have latest firmware which is BYX5, i'm leaning towards that the memorex DLs u got are with the PHILIPS.CD2 coding...because i coughed up a "coaster" using the Sony dru-710a with media made by philips~ :)

OR

if u got the RitekD01 coded DLs, you might have gotten a "bad batch" as there seems to be PLENTY of bad Ritek discs these days, also, i burned mine successfully with DVD Decrypter ISO READ/ ISO WRITE...took awhile, since they burned @2.4x, but they came out just fine, despite what people say about Ritek DLs (don't believe everything you read from people that have problems with DL media, 90% of the time, they have NO CLUE what they are doing and blame the media because THEY can't get it to work..it's USER error/outdated firmware write strategy tables/burning software choice/simply non-compatible burner that leads to the "coaster")

if we can pinpoint WHERE this issue is stemming from, we can get u burning again, i'm living proof w/ 100+ RitekD01 DLs burned on the Sony dru-710a that IT CAN BE DONE, if you know how to tweak ur system correctly...on Benq drives, on the other hand, they don't like the RitekD01 media, Verbatim DVD+R DL as in my sig. is the ONLY one i would recommend for Benq 1640/1650 drives PERSONALLY~ :)

docTY~

I just returned the memorex disks and picked up the Verbatim DL's. i also called Sony and they stated there were problems with the Memorex disks and also recommended Verbatim. I will probably try them tomorrow and post my results. Thanks for all the input. Hopefully these will work.
