This may already be answered, but bear with me. IGN has confirmed that the english version of Final Fantasy XII will not ship with the japanese vocal track and Gamespot has confirmed that the US version of FFXII is a direct translation (not otherwise differing from the japanese release). US FFXII comes out in October - now say I had two images; one of the japanese version, one of the english. Would it be possible to somehow replace the english vocal tracks in the english image with the japanese vocal tracks from the japanese image? By possible I don't mean spending the next ten years hacking into the game code, but if all the vocals are contained in one segment then simply replacing that. Obviously I know nothing of the makeup of PS2 games and you'll have to forgive me if what I suggest is utterly ludicrous. FFX was ruined for me by the atrocious voice acting and I spent half my time playing it frantically diving for the mute button and the other half cursing the $@&%^#*s at Square for not including the japanese track or at least an option to turn the off the voices.

Theoretically, it's doable. I guess it would be similar to rebuilding a game to reduce its size (DVD9 to DVD5), whereby you reduce the quality of the videos. Now you'll have to do some research on where the audio files are stored, but if all the vocal stuff are just stored as audio files, then I don't see why you can't do that.

Alternatively, you could just learn Japanese, that's a lot more beneficial in the long term if you like Japanese games ;)

Hmm, if it is possible, then you will have to rebuild the game, but look into where the vocal tracks are saved, make sure they have the same filenames and extensions and paste over them, and rebuild the game to ISO. It may not work, but then again it is worth a shot. For a guide to re-building, look at the - Games stuttering and skipping or just not booting up at all? Link in my signature.

Thanks dan168 and Mike, I'll try and find out where the audio is stored and give it a go when the US version is released.

sounds a good idea but not sure it would be worth the hassle lol

if the sound file are sep to the vids i cant see why not but if they are joined together just cant see it plus you would end you with 3 diffrent size images i think a tool would need to be made you yeah i do like the idea!

It'd be cool if you can just replace the text and subtitle files in the Japanese version with english ones, but then again, replacing the audio in the American version sounds alot easier. I was thinking about doing this too.
