Well it was working before!
Here's the deal. I'm trying to burn a cd and keep running into a wall/loop. When I backtrack I find that when I go to "Choose a Recorder", the only available choice is the "Image Drive/Virtual Device" - my CD drive doesn't show up. Also when I bring up the Wizard, in the first window there should theoretically be an option to check the box (or not) "Create Image" - this option does not show up at all in the window. So what happens is I can create an (i)image(/i) (and put it anywhere, including on the cd), but I can't create or burn any actual cd tracks.
So, the question is: where is my cd drive, and how do I "choose" it?

A couple of notes:
1. The cd/dvd drive works fine otherwise - I can play any disc, Nero recognizes the drive for reading files, and the drive works fine with any other software/programs.
2. I did have another burning software program on my computer (it came bundled with Sonic RecordNow). I got rid of it and this made no difference.
3. This all worked fine before, even with the secondary burning software on my system. I can't think of anything I've added or deleted that might have changed things.
4. I am NOT NOT NOT a "computer guy". I just like software to do it's job without me being a tech-expert to run it. Please don't use heavy duty tech-speak when answering this query (at least if you are expecting me to understand).
5. I'm running version 5.5 on Windows XP.
6. Thanks so much for any help you might provide.

Just another note: I also attempted to disable (and re-enable) the Nero Image Drive - made no difference either way. As well, I downloaded the latest update for version 5.5 - also no difference.

Sorry, cant be of any help, but i've only just noticed your post. I'm asking the exact same question here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/347147.
Like you i've done nothing different, its just stopped recognising my writer and only coming up with 'image recorder'. I've even gone and bought a new drive thinking it was that, it wasn't.

Have you tried burning with iTunes, Windoze Media Player or similar application?

Yep, the drive/burner works fine in all other ways. I can burn via i-tunes, or (the now re-installed) Sonic RecordNow. It plays discs just fine, dvd or cd, using any program. Even Nero recognizes the drive for INPUT (meaning it can read and load tracks from the drive). It's just that Nero doesn't recognize the drive for burning purposes.

Sometimes Nero doesn't play well with others, Sonic could be fouling it up. Copy and paste a burn log from Nero.

If you have Nero 6 look here:
program files>ahead>Nero>nerohistory.txt

If you have Nero 7 look here:
program files>Nero>Nero7>Core>Nerohistory.txt

This is for both of you.

We're both using Nero 5.5.
I cant post a log because i cant choose my drive to try and burn a disc. Its not that the burn fails, it wont even start.
Also i havn't got any other copying software running, in fact i havn't added or removed any software recently. Davem801 has said the same.

Neither of you have ever had a successful burn using Nero?

My Nero has worked just fine in the past. My situation sounds the same as chrisclio's (can't even "choose a recorder" so therefore can't burn a disc or even attempt to and have it fail). About the only new software that I've recently loaded that maybe(??) could have an effect is "Audacity", which reads audio and converts into
WAV or MP3 files. I only use this for direct audio input (without using the disc drive at all).
As far as the other software (Sonic), I've had both programs on my computer all along and Nero had no trouble in the past. I've since de-installed Sonic and it had no effect. I then re-installed it, updated Nero, updated Sonic, disabled and re-enabled the Nero image drive - all this had no effect, Nero still won't work properly. Note too that in when I try to follow Nero's "Wizard", in the first window that comes up, there should be (and there was in the past) an option to check a box labeled "Create an Image". This box and option do not even appear in the window anymore.

Without a log I can't help you, it will contain information about your computer's specs, media, and the state of your aspi among other things. Nero 5 is so old I wouldn't know where to tell you to find a log, so until we get a log to look at I'm afraid we can't progress.

Locoeng, thanks for trying so far. I'll see what I can do about providing a log. It might take a day or two to get to it.
Quite frankly, I might just bag it and use Sonic RecordNow for everything. It seems to be working just fine and it's SO much simpler. I get annoyed by software that needs to be updated to the "latest and greatest" version twice a year, AT MY EXPENSE just to do it's job. The only reason I got Nero was for the Image Drive (which I use to streamline my minidisc software) and that still works okay. Nero seems necessary for ultra techie types that need lots of options and such, but I just want to burn a disc now and then, and the low-tech no-brainer stuff that comes bundled with my computer works fine for that. It may be laughable by the those who know better, but it works for most of my needs.
Anywho, didn't mean to rant at you about Nero, when you are being nice and trying to help - I do appreciate it. Like I said, perhaps I will mellow out in a day or two and see about getting a log posted here. thanks again, d.

I know how you feel. Nero is a big bloated piece of work that if it works right it's great, but if it doesn't it's the biggest pain in the ass you can imagine. I use it along with many other apps and haven't had any problems with it *fingers crossed*.

Just one more approach for you, have you checked to see that your ASPI is intact and working properly? I don't know if Nero 5 has infotool bundled with it, if not here is a link to it. Run it and see if everything comes up green.
