an amd x2 4200 will be a lot better than the p4 since it is dual core. when some of the newer games come out like unreal tournament, they will encorperate dual core gaming which will make your games run a lot better. the x2 will also allow you to do a lot more multitasking so im saying you should spring for the amd x2 4200

Thanks for your opinion, I do appreciate it.

I figured I should get the 4200, but I was unsure because it's only 2.2ghz. Plus I've never had an AMD, so I don't really know how good they are.

2.2 - 3.4 is a big difference, who else thinks I should get the AMD?

well amd always have a lower clock speed than intel but the number you should look at is the number at the end i.e. amd athlon 3000+. the 3000 means its comparable to a 3 ghz intel p4. the dual core has two cores running at 2.2 so you still have more raw performance. i hope that helps

It does, thank you.

So could you say that a 4200 has 4.4 GHZ processing power?

How bout these 2 :

amd 4800 vs intel 3.0 dual core

Who would you go with?

Well what are you going to be using theese processors for:

This is how most people look at it:

AMD = Gaming!
Pentium = General Computing!

Both.

I make a living with my computer, I'm on it sereral hours everyday, but I also play games like HL2 - FEAR - Call of Duty 2 - etc. So I do need the best of both worlds.

Why do people think intel for general use & amd for gaming?

I know amd's have an awesome FSB, is that why?

Also, why do people compare an athlon 3000 to a 3.0 ghz intel p4?

A amd 3000 only has a 1.8 ghz processor, thats really weak.

How do people figure a 1.8 is comparable to a 3.0?

I would really like to understand this.

This should help to clear things up .....

Clock speed is the speed at which the processor executes instructions. A Pentium 4 can pump 1Hz per nanosecond through each of its four gates, for a total of 4Hz/ns. The AthlonXP/64 can pump 1Hz per nanosecond through each of its two gates, for a total of 2Hz/ns. However, the Pentium4 only outputs 120 Million Instructions per Second (MIPS) on each Hz, while the AthlonXP can produce 345MIPS, and the Athlon64 can produce 375. What this means is that while the Pentium 4 is running at a higher clock speed, a comparable Athlon can run just as fast. When you purchase and AMD processor it is labeled as “Athlon64 2800+” which means it can run about as fast as an Intel Pentium 4 2800MHz (2.8GHz) processor, however the AMD processor is only running 1.8GHz.
