i have an emachines M5305. it has issues as it is(heats up and shuts off or freezes, and there's a black blotch on the screen). anyway, it recently starting having another issue. if it's on and i put the screen down, it hits the little switch to make it go black. well when i try to open it again, the screen stays black. i canbarely make out that it's on, but i can't shut it down. what i have figured out is that if i have the battery in, and i plug and unplug the power adapter a few tiems it'll come back. any ideas what the problem may be? thanx in advance for the help.

yeah, my dell stays black sometimes when i halfway close it or open it to fast or something. I think if you close it all the way, and open it up it should come on. As for the blotch on the screen, sounds like you need to check your warranty if you have one. My friends had a blotch on his, and all he could really do is just get the whole thing replaced. I don't really care for Emachines myself, and I guess that gives me one more reason not to.
I didn't really understand what the update meant.

Usually when you close the lid to your notebook it will go into sleep mode, all you have to is press the power button and it will come back as if you logged off.

You can set this option in the power option.

follow these steps start/control panel/power option/power schemes tab

As far as the blotch...as stated by -techman21-, see if there is a warranty.

Also for the heating issue, see if the fans are spinning on the bottom of the notebook, or prop up the notebook and let some air flow through.

the update was referring to the power adapter thing i was doing to get it to come back on. i would start it up with the battery only then plug and unplug the adapter til it came on. as for the sleep mode thing, i don't think that's the case because i can barely make out that it's on. i can even move the mouse around and make out that it's moving the cursor. if it were asleep it would not be on atall, right? the blotch i got used to and the overheating i deal with using a usb fan stand that my best friend bought for me. the only thing i want to get the screen back so i can erase the HD load an old OS and get rid of it. hopefully get another notebook within the next year, since i can't see myself living without one for too long. got used to it.

wow, i thought that besides the blotch on the screen that it was fine, but apparently the screen is so dim that you can hardly tell it's on. Sounds like if your looking to get rid of it get out your handy magnet at start erasing. I don't think anybody is going to pay for a emachine with a broken lcd screen. If you can make out things on the screen though, you could always hook it up to another computer with a crossover cable or something to get the info off of it.

hooked it up to my PC monitor, and it comes up fine. i restored the whole thing just to make sure, and NADA! still off. so i am at a loss. i've already started looking for another notebook, although judging by the prices it really is gonna be a while. any firther suggestions will be appreciated. maybe i can fix it til i get another one. the time will be less painful.

I am also 87.80.178.118, my ISP is also Ukonline.co.uk, I am also running Windows XP and using FireFox, and like to eat mass quantities of chocolate, although not this early!
Anyhoo, what state is the power LED when this occurs, stable or flashing?

it was stable. i say was, because like i said i restored the notebook and it didn't seem to work. but after a few updates i had to restart and wouldn't you know it, it hasn't done it since. i'm pretty sure if i get my hopes up it'll happen soon. but i am enjoying these last moments with my notebook. any ideas as to what happened would help if and WHEN it happpens again.

I'm afraid I've drawn a blank with that one... very taxing.

Hi, why dont you take it to a reputable shop and get a diagnostic done. I dont think it will be more than 45-65CA.
If the screen is dark then it is probably a power inverter or a CCFL tube. Download the diagnostic from emachine and it msy uncover something about bthe power issue.there may be drivers that may help...Good Luck
