Afternoon all,

Am a noob but have been using and abusing the forum for a while now, absolute goldmine of info on here!

Have got utorrent set up and running a treat, with ports forwarded and all the security I need( Prevx, AVG, Zone Alarm, Spybot).

But I still have one worry and would like some views ? I don?t want anyone to be able to see what sites I am on or torrents I am using, more specifically any authorities that may be watching!
I have installed Hide Ip Platinum on a trial for a few days but it is proving temperamental in letting me open web-pages when it is running, am also hesitant about paying £30 to register without knowing the real benefit, is there any alternatives. What is everyone else using?

Will this stop certain organisations tracking me down!?!

Any help would be appreciated.

Have a look at Peer Guardian 2 by Phoenis Labs. It blocks companies that spy on your downloads and report back to those "certain organizations". It will also prevent certain web pages from loading but it's free. I am not familar with Hide IP Platinum and don't know if its protection is any better. Look on the right side here:http://phoenixlabs.org/

Hide IP doesn't do anything for your p2p, because, very simply, YOU CANNOT CONNECT TO ANYTHING IF YOU DON'T GIVE IT YOUR IP.

You can spoof your IP for normal transactions, but not for file transfer. Won't work.

PG2, as misty said, will provide you some level of protection, but it doesn't do anything to make your IP invisible, because, as I've said, it's impossible.

What PG2 does do is prevent a list of IP's from connecting to your computer. Now, any harvester can still connect to the tracker and grab all the IP's off of it. However, if they cannot establish a connection with you and transfer data, they cannot prove that you DID anything, perhaps you merely connected to monitor the traffic flow. Get the idea?

You really have 1 choice when it comes to real anonymity, and even that isn't in any way foolproof, and that is using proxies. Using Tor is nice (tor.eff.net) and easy, but you MUST NOT under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES use it to transfer large files, because the network simply cannot handle the bandwidth--i.e. you'll ruin it for everyone. I2P has yet to be proven, but it is designed for file transfer...it's just nowhere near finished yet. Alternatively, you could pay for a high speed SOCKS proxy (4a is the best, even tho 5 exists), and then tell your client to connect to it. However, if you do that, and you download from a private tracker, you must also use the proxy when you log INTO your account via your browser, or else it will block you when you attempt to load the torrent, because the client IP's will not match.

High speed proxies are expensive.

If you simply don't want people to be able to come to your computer and see where you've been, use FireFox and download the "distrust" extention.

Also check out GhostSurf. I've never used it but it seems reasonably priced and lets you use a proxy:http://www.digitalriver.com/v2.0-img/operations/tenebril/site/gho...

I just installed PG2 recently as well and I was surprised at the amount of tracking attempts it seems to block! I also read elsewhere (as explained by Tom Melee) that if a "tracker" can't link you to actually downloading then they have nothing on you.

Seems a useful tool so I think I'll stick with that for a while. A mate suggested "Hide IP" but didn't know much about so thanks Tom for the info!

rgr that.

For more info, download the pdf from the first link in my sig. It has a whole big section on PG on how/why it works. That part was made before pg2 and its automatic updating, but the theory is still the same, and you'll learn about the blocklist manager...which is the way to make your own customized list.

Personally, mine blocks 64.4% of the internet, lol.

Thanks Tom,

Done that so I'll have a read through that a little later. I did notice that PG2 goes mental when you select that link - safenet trying to track you. I guess thats fine for those with PG2 installed but may not be a good idea for those that don't.

Anyway, thanks again for the link.
