Hard Drive Storage Of DVDs - help

I am a total newbie and I hope Im in the right section, if not, slug me in the gut and shove me in the right direction.

I want to take the best of my massive and ever growing DVD collection and store them on a Hard Drive where I can directly access them from the Hard Drive on screen through my Home Theatre system (which consists of an all region DVD player, a DVD/VHS dual recording unit, GoDVD! interface, JVC receiver with 5.1 and loads of Svideo connections). If possible I would like to avoid using a computer to do this, but if that is impossible, I have several MacG4s and G3s maxed out with RAM and can handle video. Where do I start? Is this even possible. I'd like to literally be able to pull up on my normal large screen TV a menu, see the movies in my drive, and call them up. I would probably partition the drive between those movies stored at highest possible quality and a partition for "junk".

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

dude, there r tons of things for macs that allow you todo what you want. I have a co worker who has done basically what you are talking about with just a mini and can control it with a blue tooth remote.

Give me a couple of days to get the basics from him, but u can def find the programs to rip and convert to mpeg4 h264.

Thanks Ben..!! I need all the instruction I can get. I know macs well, I'm just a little dim on the DVD/encoding/compressing/storing and viewing end of things. Need a little knowledge link there. Wow, if I could do it from a Mini, that would be beyond cool.
