Put it this way. You have 100V coming in from the mains, but you need 5V to power your circuits, so you need it divided by 20, that's what the PSU does, not "oh, I need to put out 5 volts" but just simply divides by 20. Of course, when you have 240V coming in, you need it divided not by 20 but by 48. If you leave the switch at "100V" then it will divide 240V by 20 and you'll get 12V going to your circuits and 29V going to your regulators for drives, your CPU and your GPU. This is generally bad news.

Sam,

What make and model laptop is yours? What CPU is in it? I know you said 256 MB, but are both the memory slots full? How big is the hard drive. How full is the hard drive? Can a second hard drive be added? I need to know all of this because I may have some things that can help you improve your laptop performance. I have a high performance Toshiba 2.5" laptop hard drive, Model MK3021GAS 30 GB drive that has a very high data transfer rate, for cheap if you or anybody else can use it. I bought 2 of them for my Dell to replace the 20GB drive it came with new. Can't put 2 in the C610, so I have an extra! Specs here:

http://www.netcomdirect.com/tomk30at29no.html

For your file paging, click on start, Control Panel, System, Advanced. Under performance click settings and then advanced, then look at the Virtual Memory memory at the bottom of the little window. This will show your settings for virtual memory paging file size. Get back to me when you have that information and we'll take it from there.

crowy,

Are you refering to my memory? I'de curse you in French but I don't remember if I speak it or not! Dr. gave me some pills to improve my memory but I can't remember where I put them! Just put me down as not sure!!! And what's that little green thing to the left? LOL It looks familiar! LOL Elvis has been looking at it with great interest. Says he would like to have some to hang from the mirror of the big Intel truck! He's about chiseled half the bumper off of it trying to get rid of the big AMD sticker I put on it. Actually, I like what it does to the color scheme! I mean, yellow and blue do look good together, right? LOL Dumb SOB "Borrowed" my hang glider today. I'm out in the yard and I look up and there he was in a white leather jump suit. Looked like a giant egg with legs being carried off by a Teradactle! He! He!

Seriously though, I ordered a Sapphire X800 GTO 8X AGP video card today for my D940. It's the best I can find without getting raped.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102002

X800 XTs, X850 Pro and XTs are going for as high as $595 from the thieves on the net. Every where you look they are sold out. Newegg's posted a notice that they are being removed from their product list so I guess there won't be anymore. If I could have ordered it last week I would have gotten an X850 Pro for $139. Damn bank took to much time to record my deposit, so I missed out. I just hope this one comes with all 16 pipelines unlocked, otherwise I'm stuck with 12. That's still better than the 6800GT's 8! Still, It's a lot better that the 4 pipelines of the FX5200 AGP I have now.

I know I could have gone crazy and spent $300 (Tax & Shipping included) for an All in Wonder X800 XT from Newegg, but I plan to go PCIe in the future so I just couldn't see spending that much money. I guess this one will have to do!

It's just a thing I picked up on the first time an Elvis sighting was mentioned over at the "other" forum. I picked right up on the sighting part of it and just roared right along I've done some funny bits foolin around with old Elves and Intel too. I think the first one I did went something like this!

It seem that Elvis wasn't talking to me because I mentioned him on the forum. He was also mad because he went in the 7-11 and the guy behind the counter told him he "Christ, you look like an Elvis sighting"! Just absolutely drove him up the wall! Didn't talk to me for weeks. When I told him that all the forum wanted to know if he was going to drive the Intel truck July 23 for the Conroe. Since He was dead, he didn't have a driver's license so I got him to tell the forum that "he would be there"! I had to let him practice his driving in the front yard (big yard). He tore the damn thing up so bad to begin with that my neighbor who shares the same lot was out there watering the crap out of what was left of the lawn. It looks like a swamp out there. He'd have to swim to get his mail! I got so mad at Elvis that I put an AMD sticker on the bumper of the truck!

Just fun stuff like that.

It's just a fun way of talking about the "Impending Doom" for AMD and not a bit off-topic. Don't forget, we got people in this forum that are going to set land speed records to get one of the first Conroes'! Think about it!! Intel hasn't had anything to brag about for quite a long time! Maybe not you and me but a lot of Intel fanboys are going to go absolutely nuts. Or how about AMD being first to 1 GHz and a lot of other firsts they've had over the last couple of years. I would think that Intel would be pretty tired of being compared to AMD instead of the other way around. I wish to God I could open an Intel Store for gamers. The Intel/Gamers are going to be rubbing it in to the AMD gamers till the AM3 comes out. I would make a fortune. Mind you now this is all "if" everybody runs out and actually buys one!

Intels prices are lower than expected so we'll have to wait until the 25th to see AMD Dual-Core price cuts and a hint, at the very least about what they've got up their sleeve. I'm pretty confident that they will have have much nore than an arm. AMD's already told the press that AM3 should be late third quarter, early fourth! I'de guess between Thanksgiving and Christmas, with an Encore at the "Super Bowl". Hey, it's the absolute best way for them to show the masses, what they've got! It would reall rub salt in an old wound! When Intel brought out the P4, they used the Super Bowl for their triumphant march to the top. They had Mick Jagger with "Start Me Up!! Half of the Super Bowl commercials were Intel. We all know how that turned out! The AMDs and the P3s kicked their butt! Intel wound up not only being beaten by the competition but Beaten and embarrased by the very CPU the p4s were supposed to replace, the P3!

While I've got myself pretty far out on a limb, I might as well cut it off too. I think that AMD is ready to ship whatever they came up with "NOW"! My money's Intel not being able to make enough Conroes right away, so their supply will be short while AMD will have plenty of there chips to sell to go along with the price cuts! This is going to get interesting, very interesting indeed!!

I just want to shake the guy's hand that engineered this Intel/AMD Chess Match.

One more thought and I'm going to bed. This guy is smart and it's the smart thing to do. AMD will never ever have a better opportunity in their corporate lives. They also get the Bonus of having two very popular CPUs in production that are making them money, right now. The x2 3800+ and the Opteron 170 are selling very well. They are and have been in production all this time. They only have to deal with maybe 4 separate lines of CPU. The x2 4400, 4800, 5200+ And the FX62. They don't need to rush right out and try to cover the server market as their product is excellent already so they can concentrate entirely on the consumer market. Intel has to cover both server and consumer markets, especially the server market where AMD has shown the best and quickest improvement. So Intel has to put more effort toward the server market at the expense of the consumer market. It all makes sense to me! I've been right far more times than I've been wrong since Conroe started making noises. We'll all find out soon enough!

theone

@FIHSNERD,
Avoid Norton anti virus like the plague!!
It's a major resource hog!!
I use protector plus anti virus.It sits quietly in the background,you don't even know it's there until it's needed.Get rid of Norton asap!
Have a look here:
http://www.protectorplus.com/
In the past I've had Norton(as I think just about every computer user on earth has had at one time or another)I've also had the free a/v's(AVG and others)bit defender(another resource hog)Mcafee,Nod32,Panda,Avast, Trend micro,F-prot,Zone Alarm, Kaspersky and others that I can't remember.Protector Plus is the one I have stuck with for probably 2 years now and it never lets me down.I use it in conjunction with webroot spysweeper and so far so good.
With regards to your BSOD's,try slowing down your processor a few Mghz if your overclocked or lower your memory/fsb ratio.That should bring you some stability.Heat will bring instability. Is the room your computer is in warmer than usual??

FIHSNERD,

Get rid of that resource hogging Symantic crap and get yourself Computer associates EZ Trust. M$ sent it to me with Service Pack 1. I just renewed it for $25 for 2 years. Never had a virus with it because it does the job it's supposed to, not play you bells and whistles and overwhelm you with all sorts of fancy crap like you get with Norton. it also uses very few recources. Best AV program I've ever seen! Not at all complicated to use either!

Ok,I finally got to add that extra gig of Corsair xms ram to the Prescott build so I figured I should have better scores in the Sandra memory bandwith tests...they actually dropped(not much but are slightly lower)! Whats the deal? Can someone explain this?

The timings and speed have not changed,the only difference is I had 1gb. of ram before and now I have 2 and all 4 sticks are exactly the same.

***Edit***

Well,it appears as though tightening the timings slightly has done the trick.Though the bandwith has not improved,it is back where it was before.More experimentation to follow...

No,not on all boards in all cases,I've got it locked down at ddr 400,that did'nt change(I checked) I have all settings in the bios set to manual.I can't up the voltage anymore as it is already set to 2.85 volts.Maybe I would get better results using 2 x 1 gb sticks instead of 4 x 512's. Like I said,I've got more experimenting to do.

@boxwrench,
Adding the extra gig of ram would force a 2T command rate.
Sandra would probably show about a 3% drop.
You would need to increase your ram speed by around 7% to gain some extra bandwidth.
